Join us as we build an even cleaner B.C.\n\nJOB DESCRIPTION\n\nDuties:\n\nDevelop and maintain standards: Create, revise, and update construction, design, and commissioning standards for BC Hydro's Distribution System within your team's area of expertise.\n\nEquipment evaluation and approval: Plan and conduct field trials, assess new equipment and technologies, and collaborate with field crews and vendors to approve equipment for system-wide use.\n\nProvide technical expertise: Serve as a subject matter resource to Distribution Engineering, Distribution Design, Asset Planning, and Operations teams, offering guidance on standards interpretation, equipment application, and complex technical issues within your team's specialty.\n\nInvestigate and resolve engineering challenges: Analyze and resolve a range of complex and unique engineering problems, including failure investigations and safety-related assessments.\n\nStakeholder engagement: Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to build consensus, encourage innovation, and develop engineering solutions that prioritize safety, environmental protection, cost-effectiveness, and the needs of employees and the public.\n\nSupport modernization initiatives: Contribute to the advancement of standards development processes, including adoption of modern engineering design tools and AI-assisted workflows.\n\nBuild professional relationships: Cultivate strong relationships with colleagues, clients, and cross-functional teams to set priorities, evaluate work impacts, and address concerns.\n\nWork with independence: Operate within broad objectives and guidelines, exercising sound engineering judgment and consulting your manager on critical or high-impact projects.\n\nQualifications:\n\nA bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from a recognized or accredited university. Candidates with degrees in other engineering disciplines may be considered where substantial relevant experience can be demonstrated.\n\nRegistration, or demonstrated progress toward registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or EIT with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC). Equivalent professional registration with other Canadian or international jurisdictions will also be considered.\n\nRelevant engineering experience. Typically, 8+ years for Senior Engineer roles. Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered for junior roles including engineers in training.\n\nDemonstrate experience in overhead and underground electric utility distribution systems operating at voltages up to 35 kV.\n\nHave strong verbal and written communication skills, allowing you to clearly explain technical options, present solutions to diverse audiences, and tailor your approach to different levels of understanding.\n\nExhibit proven leadership, teamwork, relationship management, and interpersonal abilities.\n\nDemonstrate excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.\n\nApply practical knowledge and sound judgment to effectively analyze and resolve issues.\n\nRelevant experience in any of the following team specific areas is an asset: Systems, Automation, and Protection: experience with distribution automation, medium voltage electrical equipment, protection and control systems, SCADA, relaying, or related technologies.\n\nRelevant experience in any of the following team specific areas is an asset: Customer Electrical Services: experience with customer connection standards, metering, service entrance requirements, or the interface between utility and customer-owned electrical systems.\n\nWHAT WE OFFER\n\nA comprehensive benefits package\n\nA minimum of 15 paid vacation days\n\nA lifetime pension\n\nFlexible work model, depending on your role type\n\nTraining and development courses\n\nADDITIONAL INFORMATION\n\nPlease be advised that this role has been assessed as safety sensitive and pre-qualification alcohol and drug testing will be required as a pre-condition to employment.\n\nThis role has been posted as a senior engineer and candidates with less or more experience may be considered for an appropriate role.\n\nCandidates must be willing to travel.\n\nA condition of employment for this job is that you maintain a Driver's License: Class 5 In Good Standing.\n\nApplicants will be assessed based on: educational qualifications, standing with EGBC, experience (years, relevancy and quality), as well as their core competencies.\n\nInternationally trained engineers may be considered if eligible for EGBC registration.\n\nLMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) may be considered for applicants who are eligible for either their P.Eng or EIT registration with EGBC.\n\nRoles based at BC Hydro's Edmonds campus in Burnaby, BC in a 'hybrid' role, requiring in office work 2 to 3 days/week.\n\nNote: While the closing date is listed as the 30th of each month, this posting will remain open.
