Associate Director, Civic Engagement

Job Description Summary

The Associate Director of Civic Engagement oversees current and new co-curricular civic engagement programs of the Bentley Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Center (BSLCE). Current programs include large, campus-wide initiatives such as the annual Fair Trade Fair; the annual BUIILD (Bentley Unites to Improve International Livelihood and Development) fundraising campaign for global development projects; the annual Fall Farmers Market; BSLCE World Days (multiple days each year attached to the UN Sustainable Development Goals on issues such as Women’s Rights, Water, Hunger, Poverty, and Sustainability); the annual Business for the Greater Good Fair; the campuswide #BentleyVotes program; the Social Entrepreneur Student Fellowship; and many others. Future initiatives are proposed, created, and innovated by the Associate Director of Civic Engagement, in coordination with the Center’s Executive Director and student leaders.

The Associate Director of Civic Engagement leads and/or assists in overseeing current and creating new professional development trainings for BSLCE student leaders. This includes being the main BSLCE staff member overseeing our essential Student Committee Structure (which has 7 committees, with approx. 30 students) to move forward the Center’s 1) Civic Events; 2) Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice work; and 3) Social Entrepreneurship crossover work with the new Bentley Social Innovation Incubator.

The Associate Director of Civic Engagement is also charged with playing a lead role in overseeing BSLCE’s social media presence (currently Instagram and LinkedIn) and 24/7 Television. As well, this person will play a lead role as we consider expanding our alternative break trip programs.

Essential Duties

• Act as the lead in overseeing our BSLCE student committees, particularly the handful of committees that are specifically focused on civic engagement and social justice work.
• Play a key role in creating programming in the BSLCE’s Social Justice Lounge, a space designed to inspire meaningful discussion and learning on a variety of topics. This may include arranging speaker events, hosting campus dialogues, or imagining other program formats.
• Take a leadership role in overseeing the BSLCE’s social media-including LinkedIn and Instagram-and manage the BSLCE’s Student Content Coordinator, as well as social media requests and campaigns stemming from student-generated initiatives.
• Help to coordinate and oversee the Social Entrepreneurship Student Fellowship, a program of the Bentley Social Innovation Incubator, and organize campus programming on the topic of social entrepreneurship.
• Oversee students who undertake unique civic leadership projects. This may include students enrolled in the Millennium Fellowship, as one example, as well as other similar leadership opportunities.
• Oversee Bentley’s #BentleyVotes, Bentley’s biannual nonpartisan campus-wide voter registration and engagement campaign that engages faculty members, courses, and students.
• Represents the BSLCE and Bentley on a variety of campus committees relevant to the civic engagement and DEIJ work of the BSLCE.
• At times, represent the BSLCE and Bentley in on- and off-campus forums, workshops, and conferences.
• Work with other BSLCE staff to design and implement program evaluation; technology advancement; and report generation.
• The BSLCE is an all-hands-on-deck center, and the Associate Director will be expected to support at all turns, whether with Open House and Accepted Students Day; the BSLCE’s Program Manager Training each semester; the CORI check process at the beginning of each semester as we ready hundreds of students for their community partner work; visioning of the Center’s future; creating and sometimes maintaining the Center’s complex calendar; contributing key items and reports at weekly Staff Meetings; etc.
• The Associate Director will supervise students in various professional development opportunities, which may include alternative break trips, local/national conferences, and leadership retreats.

Qualifications

• Bachelors Degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience working with community agencies and/or student populations, particularly focused on domestic and/or global issues relevant to the SDGs, broadly speaking.
• Experience with Social Media content.
• Detail-oriented, highly organized, excellent communication skills, and ability to design training sessions for students involved in service-learning and our civic engagement initiatives.
• Advanced knowledge of various academic disciplines and prior work experience in working with faculty from multiple academic disciplines a plus.
• Strong public presentation skills.
• Experience and skill with running small meetings.
• Must be able to effectively manage relationships with several constituencies in both on- and off-campus settings (i.e., students, faculty, community organizations, staff and clientele).
• Experience working with student leaders that will fit well with BSLCE’s renowned Students as Colleagues model.
• Must be proficient in use of PC-based computer programs including Microsoft Office, Canva, and Internet navigation.
• Familiarity with program assessment tools and applications.

Work Environment

• Typical office setting with extensive sitting and computer work
• Ability to travel around campus for meetings and other work related events
• Some ability to help move light furniture and assist with events.
• Must be available for occasional evening or weekend trainings, meetings, retreats, workshops, or conferences. May need to travel to off campus community sites and events.
• Must attend occasional student-driven special events and programs.

The grade range is based on market data and the scope of responsibilities. Final pay will depend on your experience, education, and other relevant qualifications.

Salary Grade Range:

$60,225 - $96,687
