Responsibilities

The Underwriter Trainee (Edge trainee role) is an entry level position within Professional Lines insurance underwriting. This role is focused on teaching the underwriting practices and the application to build and grow the Edge business. In this role, trainees will participate in formal or on-the-job training, developing a working knowledge of product language, underwriting practices, policies and guidelines. This position has a defined career path and is a great first step in the insurance industry. Key functions will include but are not limited to:

Industry/Practice/Knowledge

• Link line of business policies and practices to company strategies
• Identify and act on opportunities to share knowledge with clients and customers
• Network with peers and outside resources to exchange ideas and information

Product Skills

• Compare company coverages to competitors and differentiate the company from others
• Identify new product opportunities
• Explain company service capabilities and apply them to specific client needs, including coordinating standard service delivery to customers

Book Management/Pricing Skills

• Apply standard pricing to exposures
• Apply individual loss and expense factors when applicable
• Utilize internal information systems to measure results
• Analyze and evaluate impact of producer performance on assigned book of business
• Apply key expense components and influence controllable elements according to plans and strategies
• Identify and evaluate the influence of competitor strategies in the local territory or line of business and their effects on the company’s business

Consulting

• Provide input for written premium and expense budget planning
• Offer creative solutions that contribute to the achievement of business results
• Apply underwriting strategies and standards to pre-qualify risk acceptability
• Identify and assess exposures for each risk
• Perform detailed analysis utilizing appropriate information (exposure, rate, financial, and loss) to determine account acceptability, considering customer needs
• Assess rate adequacy relative to exposure

Client Management

• Identify clients’ needs and recommend solutions
• Handle or appropriately refer cross-selling opportunities
• Negotiate standard coverage issues, close sales, and gauge customer satisfaction
• Identify and access basic underwriting and service resources and evaluate associated cost-benefit
• Demonstrate knowledge of competitors’ products, strategies, strengths, weaknesses, position within agencies and the marketplace, and financial picture
• Develop and pursue prospective clients
• Follow up on prospective and incumbent clients’ needs

Qualifications

Qualifications:

• Ability to manage multiple, complex assignments and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
• Comfort working in an ambiguous and dynamic environment
• Prior experience in insurance a plus
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook)
• Eagerness to learn and grow within the insurance industry
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
• Computer literacy including use of Word, Excel, and various project management tools
• Flexibility and openness to change and enhancements to stay competitive in the market
• Adaptability in adjusting priorities and working on multiple tasks
• Strong sense of ownership and accountability, with high motivation

Education Requirement

• Bachelor’s degree in business, Risk Management, Insurance, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
