This position provides technical leadership for teams of claims professionals, ensures compliance with company claim handling standards, and partners with underwriting, actuarial, legal, and senior leadership to effectively manage risk and achieve optimal claim outcomes.\nThe ideal candidate will possess extensive experience handling complex E&O matters, strong coverage analysis skills, litigation management expertise, and demonstrated leadership capabilities.\nJob Responsibilities\nClaims Management\nDirect the handling of complex and high-exposure professional liability claims, including E&O, miscellaneous professional liability, and related management liability matters.\nEvaluate coverage, liability, damages, and exposure issues in accordance with policy terms and applicable law.\nEstablish and maintain accurate claim reserves based on evolving claim facts and exposure analysis.\nOversee investigation strategies and ensure timely claim resolution.\nManage litigation involving insured professionals, including monitoring defense counsel performance, litigation strategy, and legal spend.\nReview and approve significant coverage positions, settlement recommendations, and reserve changes within delegated authority.\nProvide guidance regarding complex coverage issues, reservation of rights positions, and coverage determinations.\nParticipate in mediations, settlement conferences, and other dispute resolution proceedings as necessary.\nLeadership and Team Development\nLead, mentor, and develop claims professionals handling professional liability claims.\nConduct file reviews to ensure technical excellence, regulatory compliance, and adherence to company best practices.\nEstablish performance expectations and support employee development through coaching and training.\nAssist in recruiting, onboarding, and retaining high-performing claims talent.\nFinancial and Operational Management\nManage claims inventory to achieve operational performance objectives.\nMonitor reserve adequacy and contribute to financial forecasting activities.\nAnalyze claim trends and performance metrics and recommend process improvements.\nEnsure compliance with company authority guidelines and reporting requirements.\nCollaboration and Stakeholder Management\nDevelop productive relationships with insureds, brokers, defense counsel, and internal business partners.\nProvide effective reporting to senior management regarding significant claim activity.\nPartner with underwriting to identify emerging claim trends and loss drivers.\nRequirements\nQualifications\nRequired\nBachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.\nMinimum 10 years of commercial insurance claims experience.\nMinimum 5 years of direct experience handling Professional Liability and/or Errors & Omissions (E&O) claims.\nDemonstrated experience managing complex, litigated, and high-severity claims.\nStrong understanding of insurance coverage analysis and policy interpretation.\nExperience managing outside counsel and litigation budgets.\nProven leadership experience, including supervision, mentoring, or management of claims personnel.\nExcellent written and verbal communication skills.\nStrong negotiation, analytical, and decision-making abilities.\nEffective leadership and personnel development capabilities.\nStrong organizational and project management skills.\nPreferred\n15+ years of claims experience.\nPrior management experience leading a professional liability claims unit or team.\nExperience with Architects & Engineers, Insurance Agents E&O, Lawyers Professional Liability, Accountants Professional Liability, Technology E&O, or Miscellaneous Professional Liability programs.\nProfessional designations such as CPCU, RPLU, AIC, ARM, SCLA, or equivalent.\nJuris Doctor (J.D.) degree \nAbout Us\nbiBerk is where commercial insurance buyers can obtain coverage for their businesses from insurers of the Berkshire Hathaway group of Insurance Companies, one of the best capitalized insurance groups in the world. The salary range for this position is $170,000 - $185,000 per year.
