That uniqueness shapes the culture of belonging we are so proud of.\nThe Role\nWe are looking for a Senior Database Engineer to expand our team, that is geographically distributed between US, UK and now Portugal.\nAlongside the team, you will be responsible for the stability, scalability and performance of our database estate: currently we work with Informix, MySQL, Elastic Search and Cassandra. In addition, the team will be assuming responsibility for PostgreSQL as new applications are being developed using that technology.\nWhile the role emphasizes NoSQL clustered databases that can be horizontally scaled, the philosophy of the team is to cross-train on different technologies.\nWhat You'll be Doing\nWorking together to keep delivering at pace, scale and with demanded quality to support our products, you will be able to:\nElasticsearch Design and Tuning - Optimize indexes, sharding, and document modeling;\n\nDatabase Administration (e.g., Cassandra, Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL);\n\nReview of existing implementation and development of new implementations as needed;\n\nInstallation and Configuration management;\n\nAvailability Planning - Systems need to be available 24x7;\n\nMonitoring and Alerting;\n\nInfrastructure Planning and Sizing - decide when it is preferable to add a node to a cluster versus increase the resources of an existing node;\n\nQuery Tuning;\n\nPlanning and Troubleshooting - ability to collaborate with application software engineers, DevOps and network engineering in designing new systems and identifying the root cause of an issue;\n\nAutomation - mindset that it is preferable to write a program/script once rather than manually run the same process repeatedly;\n\nCoach and mentor other engineers to implement high-quality solutions;\n\nParticipate in on-call support rotation.\n\nWhat you'll bring\nAt least 5 years’ experience as a Database Engineer or similar role;\n\nIn-depth knowledge of NoSQL and SQL clustered databases (Cassandra, Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL);\n\nExpertise in Elasticsearch is required as well as a background in Cassandra.\n\nDesign and implement scalable Elasticsearch clusters to support high-traffic, data-intensive applications.\n\nMonitor, troubleshoot, and tune Elasticsearch performance, including query optimization, shard management, and cluster scaling\n\nDevelop and maintain indexing strategies, mappings, and search schemas that optimize performance.\n\nEnsure data security and compliance by managing access control, encryption, and data retention policies.\n\nEvaluate and implement new technologies and best practices to enhance data reliability and scalability.\n\nBackground in data modelling, database design and performance optimization.\n\nKnowledge of Linux (Amazon Linux and Rocky are used here);\n\nShell Scripting (essential), Python (extremely good to have), Java (good to have);\n\nKnowledge of AWS technologies and cloud-based CLIs;\n\nExperience with diagnostic log aggregation software such as DataDog;\n\nExperience working with automation software such as Ansible;\n\nAbility to define and implement replication and redundancy policies;\n\nExperience working with a high concurrency/transactional/available systems;\n\nProduct Evaluation - Ability to identify the need for, evaluate, compare and benchmark potential new software products;\n\nEnsure data security and compliance by managing access control, encryption, and data retention policies.\n\nWe'd Like You To Master In\nStrong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, including project managers, product owners, DevOps, network engineering and application teams;\n\nProactive and self-motivated with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities within deadlines;\n\nObjective, impartial, and unbiased, ensuring equal treatment for all and that decisions taken are based on objective criteria;\n\nValue opposing perspectives on an issue and can adapt your approach to achieve a successful outcome;\n\nWork towards creating an organization that is an attractive place to work.\n\nThis is what you should have.
