Software Engineering Team Leader (Engineering Manager) -Datalayer, Pune
About the Team
DataLayer is the bedrock of the Bloomberg Terminal. It is the default reactive high-performance data transformation platform that powers almost every table and chart that users interact with. Trillions of market data updates get processed every day by this software and our customers rely on the real-time calculations being 100% accurate.
Today, DataLayer engineering teams are based in London, UK, and Frankfurt, Germany.
The newly created DataLayer Platform team in Pune will take ownership of embedding DataLayer into Bloomberg runtimes, providing seamless integration with the Bloomberg Terminal and backend services. This team will work closely with other DataLayer teams and multiple infrastructure teams to ensure DataLayer runs as efficiently and reliably as possible across these environments.
About the Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic, hands-on technical leader to lead the DataLayer Platform team in Pune.
Given the depth and complexity of the technical domain, this role requires a Team Leader who is highly technical, actively involved in engineering, and experienced in people leadership. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Product, other DataLayer teams, and other engineering stakeholders to shape and execute the team’s roadmap. At the same time, this is a leadership role with a strong hands-on engineering component, where the Team Leader leads by example, working alongside the team to design and implement robust, high-quality solutions.
To set the successful candidate up for long-term success, the role will begin with a strong individual contributor focus for the first 6 months. During this period, the candidate will work directly on DataLayer projects, build deep familiarity with the technical domain, understand the surrounding Bloomberg runtimes and infrastructure, and establish strong working relationships with the existing DataLayer teams in London and Frankfurt.
After this ramp-up period, the role is expected to transition into a formal Team Leader position, with responsibility for people leadership, technical direction, roadmap execution, and close collaboration with Product and engineering stakeholders.
You will need to have
- Deep understanding of C++ and practical experience using modern language features.
- Strong understanding of object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms.
- Strong design judgment, particularly in building robust, reusable libraries and infrastructure.
- Hands-on engineering experience, with the ability to guide technical direction through direct contribution.
- Proven experience collaborating with Product and other engineering teams.
- Proven experience leading an engineering team.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- A strong sense of ownership.
We’d Love to See
- Experience using AI tools for development, debugging, and troubleshooting.
- Experience working on complex infrastructure systems under continuous use.
- Experience with performance optimization and a passion for writing performance-critical code.
- Experience designing, developing, and operating large-scale service-oriented systems.
- Understanding of writing multi-threaded code.
- Some experience with JavaScript or TypeScript.
- Exposure to multiple phases of the software development life cycle.
