Summary\n\nThe driver is also responsible for ensuring the proper condition of the assigned vehicle, maintaining accurate trip records, and reporting mechanical faults, incidents, and operational challenges promptly.\nThe role requires strict adherence to road safety regulations, vehicle operating procedures, delivery schedules, and company policies.\nThe Heavy-Duty Driver is responsible for the safe, efficient, and timely transportation of goods, equipment, materials, or other assigned loads using heavy-duty vehicles.\n\nJob Description\n\nThe successful candidate must demonstrate professionalism, reliability, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to road safety, cargo security, vehicle care, and timely delivery of assigned loads.\nThe position requires sound driving skills, route planning, knowledge of vehicle maintenance, and the ability to manage loading and offloading activities safely.\nThe Heavy-Duty Driver operates company-assigned trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles to transport goods and materials to designated destinations.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nDriving and Transportation:\n\nOperate assigned heavy-duty vehicles safely and efficiently in accordance with applicable traffic laws and company procedures.\nEnsure timely collection and delivery of goods in line with approved schedules.\nComply with designated routes and obtain approval before making unauthorised route changes or stops.\nPlan routes effectively, considering road conditions, traffic, security, vehicle restrictions, and delivery deadlines.\nConduct pre-trip, during-trip where appropriate, and post-trip vehicle inspections.\nTransport goods, equipment, raw materials, or other assigned loads to designated destinations.\n\nVehicle Maintenance and Care:\n\nReport mechanical faults, warning indicators, unusual sounds, and maintenance needs promptly.\nInspect tyres, brakes, lights, engine oil, coolant, fuel levels, mirrors, and other essential vehicle components before departure.\nKeep the assigned vehicle clean and in good operating condition.\nMaintain accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption, servicing, repairs, and vehicle usage.\nEnsure routine servicing and required inspections are completed according to the approved maintenance schedule.\n\nCargo Handling and Documentation:\n\nReport discrepancies, damaged goods, shortages, or delivery disputes immediately.\nEnsure that loads are properly secured and distributed in accordance with vehicle capacity and applicable safety requirements.\nObtain signed delivery notes, waybills, receipts, and other required acknowledgements.\nEnsure that trip records, delivery records, and other assigned documentation are completed accurately.\nVerify the quantity, condition, and relevant documentation of goods before departure and upon delivery.\n\nSafety, Security and Compliance:\n\nMaintain confidentiality regarding company operations and cargo information where applicable.\nProtect company vehicles, cargo, documents, and other assigned assets against loss, damage, or unauthorised use.\nObserve all applicable road traffic laws, speed limits, weight restrictions, and safety requirements.\nFollow company procedures for accident reporting, breakdowns, emergencies, and security incidents.\nPractise defensive driving and maintain safe following distances.\n\nReporting and Accountability:\n\nReport delays, route disruptions, accidents, and other incidents to the designated supervisor.\nPerform other related duties as assigned by Management.\nAccount for fuel advances and other operational funds in accordance with company procedures.\nSubmit trip reports, fuel records, delivery documentation, and other required reports promptly.\n\nRequirements\n\nEducation and Qualifications:\n\nTraining in defensive driving, first aid, or occupational health and safety is an advantage.\nRelevant professional driving or heavy-vehicle operation training is an added advantage.\nMinimum of Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE / WAEC / NECO) or equivalent.\nA valid Nigerian driver's licence with the appropriate class and endorsements for the vehicle to be operated.\n\nRequired Skills and Competencies:\n\nAbility to remain calm under pressure and respond appropriately to emergencies.\nGood knowledge of route planning and navigation.\nIntegrity, discipline, and accountability.\nBasic vehicle troubleshooting and maintenance knowledge.\nProblem-solving and sound decision-making skills.\nStrong knowledge of defensive driving and road safety practices.\nExcellent heavy-duty vehicle handling and manoeuvring skills.\nGood communication and interpersonal skills.\nAbility to inspect, secure, and handle cargo safely.\nAccurate record-keeping and documentation skills.\nTime management, punctuality, and reliability.\nAttention to detail and strong safety awareness.\n\nExperience:\n\nExperience operating the specific category of truck or heavy-duty vehicle used by the company is an advantage.\nExperience maintaining trip logs, delivery records, fuel records, and vehicle maintenance documentation.\n3–7 years of proven experience driving heavy-duty vehicles.\nPrevious experience transporting goods, industrial materials, equipment, or commercial cargo is preferred.\n\nGeneral Requirements:\n\nMust demonstrate honesty, professionalism, and respect for company property.\nMust be willing to undergo practical driving assessments and verification of relevant credentials.\nMust be willing to travel locally or interstate and work flexible hours when required.\nMust comply with all company safety, operational, and reporting procedures.\nMust demonstrate a safe driving history, subject to verification.\nMust be physically and medically fit for the demands of the role, assessed in a job-relevant and lawful manner.\nMust possess a valid licence appropriate for the assigned vehicle
