Learn more about BMT at www.bmt.org.\n\nThe Role\n The Senior Submarine FEA Specialist is responsible for professionally and efficiently conducting Finite Element Analyses (FEA) and providing specialist advice related to the use and application of FEA to overseas and domestic submarine programs. This role may also support surface ship and other engineering programs as required.\nThis role includes recurring long-term deployments (at least 3 months at a time within a 12-month period) at one of our overseas client sites, providing technical advice, working alongside our team of technical specialists. Deployments may include holiday periods.\nDeployed periods benefit from substantial tax-free allowances.\nKey Responsibilities\n Role Specific Responsibilities:\nLeading and conducting FEA for existing platforms and/or new builds \nConducting pressure hull inelastic collapse assessments \nConducting pressure hull fatigue analyses \nPerforming non-linear structural analyses \nWorking with shipyards, dockyards, owners, class and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM)\nWorking with leadership to identify the levels of suitably qualified and experienced personnel (SQEP) required to fulfil current and projected demand \nWorking with leadership to identify training or other developmental opportunities to develop SQEP within BMT \nWorking overseas for a minimum period of 3 months in a 12-month period \n General Responsibilities\nProvide advice and support to external and internal customers \nManage your own technical work and evaluate its effectiveness to improve best practice \nWork collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team \nComply with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct \nUndertake engineering and non-engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice \nAct as Technical Lead (TL) on specified projects \nAct as Technical Assurer on specified projects \nWork within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures \nMaintain your technical competency in your area(s) of specialization \nPromotes building a positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team building and wellness activities\nSkills, Knowledge & Expertise\nEssential:\nPressure Hull Inelastic Collapse Assessment\nExperienced in FEA for Pressure Hull Inelastic Collapse Assessment, including ability to define and implement a process that defines the collapse and operational depths of the pressure hull based on design standards, FEA results, uncertainty and safety factor knock-down approach \nFamiliar with the design and analysis process of submarine pressure hulls, both for existing platforms and new design \nThe ability to search for different failure modes, due to the incorporation of different construction defects, both for existing platforms and new design. \nThe ability to provide clear direction on how to obtain different failure modes, under different construction defects, both for existing platforms and new design. \nThe ability to calculate and reduce uncertainties using numerical and real experiments, both for existing platforms and new design. \nFamiliar with submarine pressure hull structural features. \nHighly skilled in performing non-linear FEA. \nExperience using and addressing the challenges of the risk-method, and/or the arc-length method. \nExperience creating the “paper” submarine pressure hull. \nExperience implementing Verification & Validation in solid mechanics simulations. \nPressure Hull Fatigue Analysis\nFamiliar with fatigue assessment using design standards such as PD5500. \nHighly skilled in performing linear FEAs and stress linearization. \nNon-resistant Structures Design\nFamiliar with pressure hull non-resistant structures including deck, soft tanks, and foundations. \nHighly skilled in performing linear FEAs of non-resistant structures \nShock Assessment\nHighly skilled in performing linear, modal, response spectrum and transient FEAs \nFamiliar with naval shock standards such as STANAG 4142 \nGeneral\nDegree or Technologist Diploma in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture\nMinimum 10 years of working experience dealing with ship/submarine design issues\nMinimum 6 years of experience conducting FEA on submarine structures \nExperience in the development, use and review of structural studies \nAn understanding of specifications for submarines and surface vessels \nAbility to work collaboratively and supportively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders \nEligible for a Canadian security clearance \nAble to travel internationally on a minimum of a 3-month deployment \n Desirable:\nDetailed knowledge and experience in designing and conducting FEA analysis on composite materials. \nKnowledge of domain-specific standards including International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada Regulations and Canadian Forces Technical Orders \nExisting registration or ability to obtain registration with Professional Engineering governance body in Province of work or equivalent technologist certification \nWhy Work For Us?\nAt BMT we believe in hiring the best talent, from diverse backgrounds, as this introduces new ideas to the team and our customers.
