About the opportunity

The School of Physics at the University of Sydney is currently seeking applications from exceptional candidates for the position of Lecturer in Radio Astronomy to meet the School’s strategic research objectives in radio astronomy and teaching objectives in physics. The position is outlined below.

Lecturer in Radio Astronomy

The successful applicant will establish a new research program in radio astronomy that takes advantage of the opportunities offered by the SKA Observatory telescope; broadens the current activities in radio astronomy within the School of Physics; and complements the research directions currently pursued by members of the Sydney Institute for Astronomy (SIfA). While all areas of radio astronomy relevant to the SKA Observatory will be considered, we are particularly interested in candidates with interests and expertise in any of the following areas: extragalactic radio spectral-line and continuum surveys, multiwavelength studies of active galaxies or galaxy evolution, studies of the intergalactic or circum-galactic medium, or cosmology.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • contribute to outstanding teaching and learning in Physics

  • demonstrate research excellence, develop a program of original research, and pursue external funding to support this research

  • develop research collaborations within Australia and internationally

  • participate in research student supervision at the undergraduate and postgraduate level

  • contribute to a positive, supportive and inclusive research environment within the Sydney Institute for Astronomy and the wider School of Physics

  • contribute to engagement and service/administrative activities of the School of Physics and Faculty of Science

  • contribute to and help shape the strategic goals of School and Faculty.

About you

  • a PhD or other research doctorate in a relevant field;

  • a strong track record of research in astrophysics, with at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience;

  • demonstrated vision and progress toward your own independent research program of original, high-quality, research. A track record of external funding success is an advantage;

  • demonstrated leadership potential and the ability to motivate junior members of your team;

  • evidence of developing capacity to contribute to governance, administration, and leadership in the higher education sector.
