The Automate team is a growing organization of ~30 engineers across four specialized teams, responsible for building the intelligent automation engine, intuitive user interface, and seamless integrations that enable organizations to transform how they work.\nIn this role, you will design and develop full-stack solutions with a strong emphasis on backend - you'll spend the majority of your time architecting and building the distributed systems that power our automation engine, while also owning frontend work in React/TypeScript to a solid professional standard. We expect you to be genuinely capable on both ends of the stack, not just backend-comfortable with occasional frontend exposure.You'll work with Java and React/TypeScript to build scalable, performant systems that handle millions of workflow executions daily. You'll collaborate with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to innovate on automation capabilities, improve user experience, and integrate with enterprise applications. Your work will directly impact how customers streamline their most critical business processes - from contract lifecycle management to invoice processing to employee onboarding.\nWhat You'll Do\nDesign and implement features for the Box Automate platform - leading with backend architecture and distributed systems design, while delivering polished, production-quality frontend work in React/TypeScript\n\nDevelop and optimize backend services that power workflow automation, ensuring high performance, reliability, and scalability across distributed systems\n\nBuild responsive, intuitive user interfaces in React that enable users to create, configure, and monitor automated workflows\n\nCollaborate with cross-functional teams including product, design, and infrastructure to define requirements, propose technical solutions, and deliver features on schedule\n\nParticipate in code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to engineering best practices and architectural decisions\n\nParticipate in our on-call rotation - when it's your week, you're expected to be reachable outside business hours, including evenings and weekends, to respond to production incidents\n\nAttend and engage in weekly stand-ups, team meetings, and manager 1:1s to ensure alignment and continuous improvement\n\nWho You Are\nWe are an AI-first company. This means you approach your work with a growth mindset and find ways to leverage AI to help make faster, smarter decisions that will 10X your impact at Box.\n5+ years of professional software development experience, with demonstrated expertise in full-stack development\n\nStrong proficiency in Java and and TypeScript/JavaScript with a modern framework such as React; deep understanding of object-oriented design principles, REST APIs, and modern web development patterns\n\nComfortable working across the full-stack at a professional level - you can build and ship frontend features independently without relying on a dedicated frontend engineer to carry the UI work\n\nExperience building scalable backend systems, including database design, caching strategies, and asynchronous processing\n\nExperience with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS or Azure) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)\n\nExperience influencing technical direction beyond your immediate team - through RFCs, design docs, or cross-team collaboration\n\nProven ability to assess, communicate, and complete project milestones with manager and team members in a time-sensitive manner\n\nFluent English proficiency (written and verbal)\n\nPreferred Skills\nExperience with workflow automation, business process management, or integration platforms (nice to have, not required)\n\nFamiliarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and DevOps practices\n\nTrack record of leading cross-functional projects or mentoring junior engineers\n\nExperience with enterprise integrations and API design\n\nContributions to open-source projects or demonstrated passion for software craftsmanship\n\nMethodology\nAgile management - Scrum\n\nIssue tracking tool - Jira\n\nKnowledge repository - GitHub Enterprise\n\nCode reviews - GitHub Enterprise\n\nVersion control system - Git\n\nBox lives its values, with community and in-person collaboration being a core part of our culture.
