Our industry leading techniques help us create and deliver unique beer whilst doing our bit (and others’) for the environment\n\nAbout The Role\nJob Purpose\nThe Automation Engineer is responsible for maintaining, developing and improving the brewery's automation, control systems and Operational Technology (OT) infrastructure to ensure safe, reliable and efficient manufacturing operations.\nWorking as part of the Engineering team, the role provides specialist technical expertise across PLC, SCADA, HMI and industrial control systems, supporting both day-to-day operations and the delivery of engineering projects. The role will identify opportunities to improve manufacturing performance through automation, standardisation and digital technologies while ensuring all control systems remain secure, compliant and fit for purpose.\nThe Automation Engineer will work closely with Brewing, Packaging, Maintenance, AD Plant, H&S and Quality teams to improve plant performance, reduce downtime and support the site's operational and strategic objectives.\nKey Result Area / Principal Duties & Responsibilities\nAutomation & Control Systems\nMaintain, support and continuously improve all site PLC, SCADA, HMI and industrial control systems.\nDevelop, modify and commission PLC and HMI software in accordance with engineering standards.\nSupport fault finding and root cause analysis of complex automation and controls issues.\nMaintain automation documentation, software backups and version control.\nStandardise automation architecture, coding practices and control philosophies across the site.\nEnsure all automation changes follow the Management of Change (MoC) process.\nOperational Technology (OT)\nSupport the development and maintenance of the site's Operational Technology infrastructure.\nAssist in maintaining OT cybersecurity controls, system backups and disaster recovery procedures.\nMaintain industrial communication networks, remote access systems and plant historians where applicable.\nSupport lifecycle planning for automation hardware and software.\nProject Delivery\nDeliver the automation elements of capital and improvement projects from design through to commissioning.\nProduce functional design specifications and control philosophies.\nSupport equipment acceptance testing (FAT/SAT), commissioning and validation activities.\nCoordinate with equipment suppliers and systems integrators to ensure successful project delivery.\nEnsure projects are completed safely, on time and to agreed technical standards.\nContinuous Improvement\nIdentify opportunities to improve safety, quality, reliability and efficiency through automation.\nDevelop automated solutions that reduce manual intervention and improve process consistency.\nSupport data collection, reporting and digital manufacturing initiatives.\nWork alongside wider production teams to optimise manufacturing performance.\nOperational Support\nProvide specialist technical support during production issues involving automation and controls.\nSupport planned maintenance activities relating to automation systems.\nWork collaboratively with Maintenance to improve asset reliability through engineering improvements.\nParticipate in out-of-hours support or on-call arrangements where required.\nHealth, Safety & Compliance\nEnsure all automation activities comply with company engineering standards and legal requirements.\nSupport machinery safety assessments and functional safety improvements.\nMaintain compliance with electrical, machinery and control system legislation.\nEnsure all modifications are appropriately documented and validated.\nDocumentation & Standards\nMaintain accurate electrical drawings, control system documentation and software records.\nDevelop and maintain engineering standards for automation and controls.\nEnsure documentation is updated following all system modifications.\nPromote standardisation of components, programming methods and engineering practices.\nKey Relationships - Internal & External\nH&S Team, Production Team’s, IT team, and 3rd\nparty OEM’s/automation suppliers\nHealth & Safety\nEnsure that Health and Safety guidelines and fire regulations are strictly adhered to at all times\nComply with safe working practices as defined by BrewDog\nComplete online or face to face training as and when internally and externally\nAbout You\nQualifications & Specific Training\nDegree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical, Electronic, Automation or Control Engineering.\nExperience\nProven experience in automation engineering within the Food & Beverage or FMCG industry.\nProven experience in maintenance and programming of PLC’s (e.g., Siemens Step 7 and TIA Portal, Allen Bradley, Omron), SCADA/HMI systems (Ignition and Siemens) and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, Profinet).\nProven experience in managing OT network security.\nExperience with data acquisition systems and reporting tools.\nKnowledge\nStrong understanding of industrial communications and control architectures.\nFamiliarity with robotics and vision systems.\nKnowledge of data acquisition and reporting tools.\nUnderstanding of control panel design and electrical schematics.\nCompetence in instrumentation and sensors (temperature, pressure, flow, etc.)\nSkills\nStrong problem-solving and analytical skills.\nExcellent management of change abilities.\nAbility to convey technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.\nProficient in creating and maintaining comprehensive system documentation.\nPersonal Attributes\nKeen to stay updated on emerging automation technologies and industry trends.\nAbility to adapt to rapidly changing production
