An officer of higher rank reviews work assignments and gives specific instructions and assistance when special problems arise. A Deputy Sheriff is required to exercise independent judgment and discretion in difficult or unusual situations.\nEssential Job Functions\nServes civil processes received from the County courts.\nPreserves order during court sessions and guards persons brought before court.\nTransports prisoners to and from court.\nProtects disaster areas.\nEnforces laws, prevents, and detects criminal acts. Investigates criminal activities.\nChecks business areas in the County to make sure doors are secure, and prevents acts of vandalism and illegal entry.\nTransports emergency psychiatric commitments.\nSecures funeral and traffic details.\nPatrols County, and answers calls and complaints.\nPatrols highways for traffic violators and renders assistance at the scene of an accident to disabled motorists.\nAttaches property on court order.\nRenders assistance to citizens whose health or property is in jeopardy.\nWorks with municipal, State, and Federal officers in cooperative law enforcement.\nKeeps records and prepares reports as directed.\nOther Job Duties (Duties listed are not intended to be all inclusive nor to limit duties that might reasonably be assigned.)\nPerforms related work as required.\nKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.)\nKnowledge of--\nLaw enforcement practices, court procedures and process serving regulations.\n\nGeography of the County.\n\nSkill in--\nUse of firearms.\n\nAbility to--\nUnderstand and carry out complex oral and written directions.\n\nDeal firmly and courteously with the public.\n\nAnalyze situations rapidly.\n\nRequired Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)\nTraining and/or Education\nHigh School diploma or GED equivalent.\nLicenses or Certificates\nMust possess a valid Driver’s License and be eligible to obtain a Maryland License, if necessary.\nSpecial Requirements\nPhysical ability test, written test, background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological examination and physical examination will be required. Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment.
