Mate is supervised by the Captain of the vessel.\nEssential Job Functions\nPerforms daily boat upkeep, maintenance, and cleaning above and below deck during operating season (May-October).\nProvides narrative over public address system while underway.\nAssists with pre-season fitting-out and end of season lay-up.\nAssists with minor repairs, maintenance, and preservation of vessel throughout the year.\nEnsures that pumps, engine, batteries, and mooring lines are in good working order during lay-up period.\nHandles mooring lines.\nImplements and enforces boat and water safety procedures.\nOther Job Duties (Duties listed are not intended to be all inclusive nor to limit duties that might reasonably be assigned.)\nStores materials and paints.\nAssists with loading and debarking passengers, including wheelchair passengers when necessary.\nUses fixed and portable fire fighting equipment if required.\nUses and maintains a variety of life-saving equipment, including life raft and rings, personal flotation devices and flares.\nAssists with changing oil in main engine, if required, and checking fluid levels in engine and batteries.\nAssists with maintaining charter bookings log.\nPerforms related work as required\nKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.)\nKnowledge of--\nSmall craft operation and seamanship.\n\nBasic marine engine operation and maintenance.\n\nKnowledge of local history and geography and experience in working with the public.\n\nAbility to--\nHandle small craft.\n\nSpeak clearly and distinctly.\n\nPerform manual work.\n\nAccept commands, follow orders, and get along well with staff, public and volunteers.\n\nDeal effectively with the public.\n\nRequired Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)\nTraining and/or Education:\nHigh School diploma or GED equivalent.\nExperience:\nZero to three months of experience on small craft or at sea.\nLicenses or Certificates:\nCompletion of CPR Certification within four weeks of start date.\nSpecial Requirements:\nEnrollment in mandatory U.S. Coast Guard drug testing program.\nPhysical Demands:\nWork requires occasional heavy physical effort (must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.)\nUnusual Demands:\nRequired to work weekends and holidays in operating season (May-October).\nFLSA Status:\nNonexempt\nCompensation Steps:\nPay rate: $20.94 per hour\nGrade H12, temporary position, 17.5 hours per week\nCalvert Marine Museum\nPosition closing date: September 30, 2026\nPlease Note: This position will close at 11:59 p.m. on September 30, 2026.
