This is an excellent opportunity for an underwriter looking to broaden technical expertise and take on increased market-facing responsibilities.\nThe role will support a diverse Ocean Marine portfolio that includes Ocean Cargo, Marine Property, and Marine Liability risks distributed through national and specialist marine brokers.\nResponsibilities\nUnderwriting\nUnderwrite new and renewal Ocean Marine business within delegated authority and underwriting guidelines.\n\nEvaluate Ocean Cargo, Hull, and Marine Liability risks and determine appropriate pricing, terms, conditions, and coverage structures.\n\nAnalyze submissions, loss history, financial information, and exposure data to make sound underwriting decisions.\n\nPrepare and present underwriting recommendations on larger or more complex risks.\n\nMaintain underwriting discipline while achieving profitability, retention, and growth objectives.\n\nMonitor portfolio performance and identify trends affecting profitability and risk selection.\n\nEnsure underwriting files and documentation meet regulatory, audit, and company standards.\n\nBroker Relationship Management\nDevelop and maintain strong relationships with national, regional, and specialist marine brokers.\n\nServe as a trusted underwriting partner by providing responsive service and timely underwriting decisions.\n\nConduct regular broker meetings, market visits, and account reviews.\n\nPromote company appetite, capabilities, and product offerings to brokers and distribution partners.\n\nCollaborate with brokers to identify new business opportunities and strengthen existing relationships.\n\nTerritory Management\nManage an assigned geographic territory and broker distribution strategy.\n\nDevelop and execute territory plans focused on profitable growth and diversification.\n\nMonitor production, pipeline activity, and market trends within the territory.\n\nIdentify opportunities to expand broker relationships and increase market penetration.\n\nTravel as needed to meet with brokers, insureds, and industry partners.\n\nCollaboration & Business Development\nPartner with underwriting leadership, claims, actuarial, and operations teams to support portfolio objectives.\n\nAssist in the development of underwriting strategies and product enhancements.\n\nSupport business development initiatives and contribute to achieving annual production goals.\n\nStay informed of marine market conditions, emerging risks, and competitor activity.\n\nSkills and Qualifications\nBachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.\n\nMinimum 3 years of commercial underwriting experience, preferably within Ocean Marine, Marine Cargo, Hull, Liability, Inland Marine, or related specialty lines.\n\nStrong analytical and decision-making skills.\n\nExcellent communication and relationship-building abilities.\n\nAbility to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.\n\nProficiency with Microsoft Office applications and underwriting systems.\n\nExperience underwriting Ocean Cargo and/or Hull & Liability risks.\n\nProgress toward or completion of CPCU, AMIM, or other insurance designations.\n\nExisting broker relationships within the marine insurance market.\n\nUnderstanding of marine cargo, logistics, vessel operations, and marine liability exposures.\n\nSalary Range: $165,000 - $180,000","description_format":"text","description_chars":3798,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":3,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":true},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Financial Services","Property & Casualty Insurance","Reinsurance"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-29T13:45:21Z"}],"liveness":{"score":68,"band":"ok","label":"Likely open","p_open":1,"p_active":0.753,"p_room":0.9,"age_days":19,"expected_fill_days":33,"reasons":["conf:7","win:mid"],"computed_at":"2026-09-30T04:39:16Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":180000,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/canopius-underwriter","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/canopius-underwriter.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-09-30T04:39:16Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","usage":{"tier":"crawler","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":3362,"day_limit":5000,"remaining_today":1638,"minute_limit":60,"resets_at":"2026-10-01T00:00:00Z"}}}
