This is a systems-thinking role for an experienced engineer who can drive architecture, influence engineering standards, and help scale a platform, organization, and culture simultaneously.\nThe Role\nAs a Staff Software Engineer, you will serve as a senior technical leader across multiple product and platform initiatives. You will partner closely with Product, Design, Infrastructure, and Engineering leadership to design and evolve systems that are reliable, scalable, and maintainable as Canopy grows.\nYou will operate horizontally across teams - helping define architecture, improve engineering velocity, raise quality standards, and mentor engineers through influence rather than direct management.\nThe ideal candidate combines deep technical judgment with pragmatism, strong execution instincts, and the ability to simplify complexity in fast-moving environments.\nWhat You’ll Own\nTechnical Leadership & Architecture\nLead the design and evolution of scalable full-stack systems across frontend applications, backend services, APIs, and platform infrastructure\nDrive architectural decisions that improve reliability, maintainability, performance, and developer velocity\nIdentify and address technical debt, scalability bottlenecks, and operational risks before they become business constraints\nEstablish and reinforce engineering best practices around observability, testing, security, resiliency, and deployment workflows\nContribute meaningfully to long-term platform and technical strategy\nFull-Stack Product Development\nDesign and build modern web applications and services powering mission-critical healthcare workflows\nDevelop highly performant frontend experiences using modern frameworks such as React or Vue\nBuild backend systems and APIs using Node.js and distributed service architectures\nCollaborate closely with Product and Design to translate ambiguous requirements into elegant technical solutions\nOptimize systems for usability, reliability, and operational scale\nCross-Functional Influence\nPartner across Engineering, Product, Customer Experience, and Operations to solve complex organizational and technical problems\nAct as a force multiplier by improving team decision-making, engineering processes, and development standards\nFacilitate technical discussions and drive alignment across teams with differing priorities\nHelp teams balance speed, quality, and long-term maintainability\nOperational Excellence\nImprove deployment reliability, monitoring, incident response, and production readiness practices\nContribute to scaling Canopy’s cloud-native infrastructure and Kubernetes-based platform\nChampion engineering quality through code reviews, design reviews, and operational rigor\nHelp define and evolve engineering operating rhythms as the company scales\nMentorship & Engineering Culture\nMentor and level up engineers through technical guidance, coaching, and example-setting\nRaise the bar on technical craftsmanship and systems thinking across the organization\nFoster a collaborative, high-accountability engineering culture rooted in curiosity, ownership, and continuous improvement\nContribute to hiring and talent assessment for senior engineering candidates\nWhat We’re Looking For\nRequired Experience\n8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant experience building and scaling production systems\nDemonstrated experience operating at Staff Engineer scope across teams or domains\nStrong expertise in modern full-stack application development\nDeep proficiency with JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystems, including React and/or Vue.js and Node.js\nExperience designing distributed systems, APIs, and service-oriented architectures\nStrong experience with cloud-native infrastructure and Kubernetes in production environments\nExperience working with SQL and NoSQL databases\nProven ability to influence technical direction without formal authority\nStrong debugging, systems analysis, and architectural problem-solving capabilities\nPreferred Experience\nExperience in healthcare, safety-critical, or high-availability environments\nExperience scaling SaaS platforms through periods of rapid growth\nFamiliarity with event-driven architectures, real-time systems, or location-aware platforms\nExperience improving engineering operational maturity in growing organizations\nExposure to DevOps, SRE, or platform engineering practices\nHow We Work\nAt Canopy, strong engineers do more than write code.
