This role is the engineering counterpart to our Solutions Consultants—where they translate customer needs into requirements, you'll transform those requirements into robust, scalable technical solutions that push the boundaries of our platform.As a Solutions Engineer, you'll architect and implement custom solutions using the Canvas SDK, build reusable plugins and integrations, and extend our platform's capabilities to meet complex healthcare automation challenges. You'll partner closely with Solutions Consultants to prototype rapidly, validate technical approaches, and deliver production-ready solutions that delight customers. This is a builder role where you'll directly impact how healthcare providers leverage our EMR platform while contributing to the evolution of our developer tools and SDK.The ideal candidate brings strong engineering fundamentals, passion for healthcare technology, and exceptional ability to navigate between rapid prototyping and production-quality code. We're looking for someone who experiments fearlessly, iterates quickly, and can build elegant solutions from the ground up while maintaining the robustness required for healthcare systems.Responsibilities\nTechnical Solution Development\n\nBuild production-ready solutions using the Canvas SDK, demonstrating mastery of event-driven architectures, handlers, and effects\n\nTransform PRDs from Solutions Consultants into elegant, maintainable code that solves real healthcare workflow challenges\n\nCreate robust plugins and integrations that extend platform capabilities while maintaining HIPAA compliance and clinical documentation standards\n\nDevelop and maintain a library of reusable components and patterns that accelerate future solution delivery\n\nPlatform Enhancement & Innovation\n\nIdentify gaps in SDK capabilities and contribute directly to platform improvements through pull requests and feature development\n\nDesign and implement new SDK features that enable broader solution patterns across the customer base\n\nBuild developer tools and utilities that improve the efficiency of both internal teams and external developers\n\nCreate technical documentation, integration guides, and reference implementations for complex solutions\n\nCross-Functional Technical Leadership\n\nPartner with Solutions Consultants to validate technical feasibility and architect optimal approaches\n\nCollaborate with core engineering teams to align custom solutions with platform roadmap and architectural standards\n\nEnable customer success through technical workshops, debugging sessions, and solution handoffs\n\nMentor Solutions Consultants on technical concepts and best practices for SDK usage\n\nQualifications\nRequired Experience & Background\n\nBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience\n\n2+ years of professional software development experience with modern web stacks\n\nDemonstrated ability to build end-to-end solutions from requirements to production deployment\n\nStrong problem-solving skills with ability to navigate ambiguous technical challenges\n\nTechnical Skills & Capabilities\n\nProficiency in Python is mandatory.\n\nJavaScript/TypeScript and modern frontend frameworks (React preferred) are a bonus.\n\nExperience with API design, event-driven architectures, and plugin-based systems\n\nStrong understanding of software design patterns, testing practices, and code maintainability\n\nComfort with rapid prototyping while maintaining production-quality standards\n\nExperience with version control, CI/CD pipelines, and modern development workflows\n\nHealthcare & Domain Expertise\n\nInterest in healthcare technology and improving clinical workflows through automation\n\nUnderstanding of healthcare data standards (FHIR, HL7) or willingness to learn quickly\n\nAbility to translate clinical requirements into technical architecture decisions\n\nAppreciation for the complexity and criticality of healthcare systems\n\nPersonal Attributes\n\nBuilder mentality—passionate about creating solutions that directly impact users\n\nCollaborative approach to problem-solving with strong communication skills\n\nGrowth mindset with ability to learn new technologies and domains rapidly\n\nPragmatic engineering approach—knows when to build for today versus tomorrow\n\nCustomer empathy with drive to understand and solve real user problems\n\nNice-to-Have Qualifications\n\nExperience building or maintaining SDKs, developer tools, or platform products\n\nBackground in healthcare IT, EMR integrations, or clinical systems\n\nFamiliarity with regulatory requirements (HIPAA, FDA guidelines) for healthcare software\n\nExperience with Python for backend services or data processing\n\nPrior experience in customer-facing engineering or solutions architecture roles\n\nContributions to open-source projects or technical community engagement\n\nWhat Success Looks Like at 90 Days\nShip 5+ production-ready solutions that demonstrate deep understanding of the Canvas SDK and platform capabilities\n\nContribute at least 2 meaningful enhancements to the SDK or developer tools based on customer solution needs\n\nEstablish strong working relationships with Solutions Consultants and become go-to technical partner for complex implementations\n\nCreate technical documentation and reference implementations that enable self-service solution development\n\nGrowth PathSolutions Engineers at Canvas have multiple growth trajectories. Within 12-18 months, high performers evolve into senior solutions engineers who architect our most complex customer implementations and drive platform strategy. Many transition into core platform engineering roles, bringing deep customer context to shape product development. Others grow into technical leadership positions, building and scaling our solutions engineering practice.
