Prompt Engineer  

The Prompt Engineer will design, evaluate, and optimize prompt strategies powering GitLab Duo AI agents that automate software development lifecycle (SDLC) activities. This role partners closely with software engineers, DevSecOps specialists, and platform architects to convert development workflows into reliable, reusable AI behaviors that operate consistently within enterprise governance standards. 

The ideal candidate understands modern LLM capabilities, prompt engineering techniques, software engineering processes, and evaluation methodologies. 

Responsibilities  

·         Design prompts that drive GitLab Duo AI agents across SDLC workflows 

·         Translate developer requirements into reusable prompt templates and agent behaviors 

·         Develop structured prompt libraries and reusable patterns 

·         Define evaluation criteria and acceptance testing for AI-generated outputs 

·         Perform prompt experimentation, benchmarking, and regression testing 

·         Improve prompt reliability, determinism, and guardrail adherence 

·         Collaborate with AI engineers on context design and tool utilization 

·         Document prompt standards, approval processes, and governance artifacts 

·         Support user acceptance testing with development teams 

·         Continuously optimize prompts based on production feedback 

Required Qualifications  

·         3+ years in software engineering, AI, or automation 

·         Experience working with Large Language Models (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or similar) 

·         Understanding of prompt engineering methodologies 

·         Familiarity with Git-based software development workflows 

·         Strong written communication and analytical skills 

·         Experience defining evaluation criteria for AI systems 

·         Ability to translate technical requirements into AI behaviors 

Preferred Qualifications  

·         Experience with GitLab Duo or GitHub Copilot Enterprise 

·         Experience designing enterprise AI assistants or agents 

·         Familiarity with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) 

·         Experience supporting SDLC automation initiatives 

·         Knowledge of secure software development practices
