The engineering you do here has a direct line to real economic change for people who have been underserved for too long. \n\n If you thrive on ownership, ambiguity and direct business exposure – read on. \nWhat you'll do here \n\nTake ownership of selected back-end domains within our emerging markets platform \n\nLead the design of complex back-end systems and make architectural decisions that drive our technical standards \n\nBuild and maintain integrations that power entrepreneur accounts, merchant acquisition and payment services – including account lifecycles, transactions, payment rails and cards \n\nDesign and implement distributed, event-driven and domain-driven solutions \n\nMentor and provide leadership to the existing engineering team \n\nEngage directly with stakeholders and senior business leaders to translate business objectives into technical solutions \n\nEvaluate and introduce technologies that move the platform forward and improve development processes \n\nProactively identify questions, gaps and opportunities beyond your immediate tasks – the team needs people who look further than the ticket in front of them \n\nOur tech stack \n\nJava and Spring Boot – your primary back-end environment \n\nKafka – event-driven architecture and messaging \n\nPostgreSQL – our primary data store \n\nAWS – where we build and run at scale \n\nTerraform – infrastructure as code and DevOps tooling \n\nOdin ecosystem – internal tooling and platform integrations \n\nAI-assisted development – we use AI tooling actively to amplify what engineers can do \n\nWhat you bring \n\rExperience \n\n6+ years of proven back-end software development experience, delivering production-grade systems at scale \n\nDeep expertise in Java and Spring Boot within event-driven or distributed systems \n\nHands-on experience with Kafka (Or Similar), PostgreSQL and AWS \n\nWorking knowledge of Terraform or DevOps practices is a strong advantage \n\nExperience with domain-driven design and event-driven architectures is highly valued \n\nExperience in payments, fintech or financial services environments preferred \n\nThe ability to engage confidently with senior business stakeholders – not just engineers \n\nProven ability to work independently and take ownership \n\nEducation \n\nMinimum: Grade 12 National Certificate \n\nPreferred: A relevant tertiary qualification in information technology \n\nKnowledge \n\nYou can apply expert-level knowledge and develop others' understanding across: \n\nEvent-driven and domain-driven architectures \n\nAdvanced Java programming and Spring Boot ecosystem \n\nDistributed systems design, including the saga pattern and resilience patterns such as circuit breakers and bulkheads \n\nDatabase systems and query optimisation (SQL and NoSQL) \n\nRESTful API design and integration \n\nMessage-based systems and Kafka event streaming \n\nCloud computing platforms and services (AWS) \n\nInfrastructure as code using Terraform \n\nTesting practices – unit, integration and contract testing \n\nIT systems development processes (SDLC), agile delivery and version control \n\nWhat's in it for you \n\rThis is where engineers with real conviction do some of their most impactful work. \n\nYou're not looking for a role where the decisions are already made and you're just there to execute.
