Please do not apply if you will be unable to fulfil the requirements.\nThe Role\nThe Operations team keeps Carbon Clean’s pilot plant and utility systems running safely, reliably and in full compliance, providing the stable platform on which our process development depends. As a Process Control Engineer, you will oversee the day-to-day operation of controlled processes and the utilities that support them, including boilers, cooling water, compressed air, nitrogen and associated infrastructure, ensuring high equipment availability and consistent process performance. You will manage manpower efficiently, including the coordination and supervision of contractors, and uphold a culture of operational discipline built on rigorous permit-to-work compliance, with the goal of zero major HSE incidents.\nYou will be skilled at structured troubleshooting and root cause analysis, able to identify process upsets quickly and resolve them before they affect safety or performance. You will maintain accurate operational and maintenance records, and develop clear reports, SOPs and training materials that help the wider team work safely and effectively. Above all, you will champion continuous improvement, identifying and leading initiatives that strengthen safety, reliability, efficiency and overall process performance across the plant.\nRequirements\nWhat success looks like:\n\nLead day-to-day operation and monitoring of pilot plant processes through Control systems.\nEnsure safe operation and availability of utilities required for pilot plant campaigns.\nDrive compliance with HSE systems, work permit requirements, waste management procedures, and operational standards.\nSupport process optimization, troubleshooting, and reliability improvement initiatives.\nDevelop operational excellence through robust documentation, reporting, and operator training.\nCollaborate with engineering and R&D/ Technology teams to support pilot campaigns and technology development.\nRole Focus:\n60%: Pilot Plant & Utilities Operations, Process Monitoring, PLC Operations, Shift Supervision & Troubleshooting\n20%: HSE Management, Permit-to-Work Compliance, Hazardous Waste Management, Operational Risk Control\n20%: Process Improvement, Documentation, Reporting, Training & Continuous Improvement InitiativesResponsibilities consist of but are not limited to... \n\nPilot Plant & Utilities Operations\nOperate, monitor, and control pilot plant processes through control systems.\nLead startup, shutdown, and routine operation of pilot plant equipment and utility systems.\nEnsure safe and reliable operation of utilities including boiler, cooling water, compressed air, nitrogen, pumps, and associated systems.\nMonitor process performance, analyze trends, and optimize operating parameters.\nCoordinate daily operational activities to ensure successful execution of pilot plant campaigns.\nIdentify process abnormalities and implement immediate corrective actions.\nTroubleshoot process, instrumentation, mechanical, and utility-related issues to maximize plant availability.\nCoordinate with maintenance teams to ensure timely resolution of equipment issues.\nSupport operational readiness and plant reliability initiatives.\nHSE, Permit to Work & Waste Management\n Demonstrate visible HSE leadership and promote a strong safety culture across all operational activities.\nEnsure strict compliance with Permit-to-Work systems including hot work, electrical isolation, line breaking, and confined space activities.\nParticipate in HAZOP, LOPA/ HIRA risk assessments, Job Safety Analyses (JSA), and incident investigations.\nMonitor safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and hazardous waste in compliance with regulatory and company requirements.\nConduct workplace inspections, safety observations, and corrective action follow-up.\nSupport emergency response preparedness and participate in drills when required.\nMaintain compliance with site HSE procedures, policies, and legal requirements.\nProcess Improvement, Documentation & Training\nLead troubleshooting and root cause analysis of operational issues using structured problem-solving methodologies.\nIdentify opportunities to improve safety, reliability, productivity, and operating efficiency.\nPrepare and maintain SOPs, operating manuals, work instructions, and operating logs.\nGenerate operational, process performance, and incident reports.\nAnalyse process data and provide recommendations for optimization and continuous improvement.\nSupport training and competency development of operators and technicians.\nShare operational learnings and best practices across teams.\nYou are an ideal candidate if....\nBachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering.\n3-5 years of experience in chemical, petrochemical, oil & gas, fertilizer, specialty chemical, or process manufacturing industries.\nStrong hands-on experience in plant operations and troubleshooting.\nPractical experience operating SCADA/PLC and/or DCS control systems.\nGood understanding of utility systems such as boilers, compressed air systems, cooling water systems, pumps, and process equipment.\nExperience working with Permit-to-Work systems and HSE requirements in industrial facilities.\nExposure to hazardous chemical handling and waste management practices.\nStrong root cause analysis and problem-solving skills.\nAbility to work independently in shifts and respond effectively to operational issues.\nStrong communication, teamwork, and continuous improvement mindset.\nWhy join us?\nJoin a mission-driven team tackling one of the world's toughest challenges: decarbonising heavy industry, with an ambition to capture 1 billion tonnes of CO₂.
