Preventive Maintenance Fleet Technician - Second Shift, Levels I-IV

City of Olathe | $22.19-$39.84 per hour, based on qualifications

$0.74 per hour second-shift differential, in addition to base pay

Work Location: City of Olathe Fleet Services, Olathe, Kansas

The City of Olathe is recruiting for a Preventive Maintenance Fleet Technician to help keep the City’s passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, vans, and other assigned fleet units safe, reliable, and ready to support daily municipal operations and essential City services.

In this role, you will perform preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on a diverse fleet of light-duty vehicles and equipment. Work includes mechanical, electrical, brake, steering, suspension, air-conditioning, and drivetrain systems.

Who should apply?

Candidates with direct fleet or automotive maintenance experience are encouraged to apply. The City will also consider closely related, transferable mechanical experience when evaluating qualifications and Technician-level placement.

Relevant experience may include automotive, light-duty truck, diesel, commercial vehicle, dealership, rental fleet, heavy equipment, agricultural equipment, military mechanical maintenance, technical school, trade school, or manufacturer training.

Experience involving inspections, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, electrical systems, brakes, steering, suspension, air conditioning, or drivetrain repair is also relevant.

Applicants do not need to have every preferred certification at the time of application. The City provides training and support for required post-hire credentials.

Technician levels and pay

Technician I: $22.19-$29.48 per hour

Typically requires 0-2 years of related experience.

Technician II: $24.23-$32.42 per hour

Typically requires 2-4 years of related experience.

Technician III: $26.01-$35.67 per hour

Typically requires 4-6 years of related experience in fleet, automotive, light-duty truck, or related vehicle maintenance.

Technician IV: $28.56-$39.84 per hour

Typically requires 6+ years of progressively responsible related experience, including complex diagnostics and repair work.

This position may be filled at the Technician I, II, III, or IV level based on related experience, training, certifications, and demonstrated ability to perform the work independently.

A high school diploma or GED is required for all Technician levels. Related technical or trade school, manufacturer training, military mechanical experience, and industry certifications may be considered when determining technician-level placement.

Licenses and certifications

Required at hire

  • Valid driver’s license with a favorable driving record.

Required after hire

  • Kansas Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within six months of hire.
  • Refrigerant recovery/recycling certification within the required timeframe, depending on assignment.
  • Other assignment-specific certifications, as required.

Preferred qualifications include

  • ASE Automobile and Light Truck certifications.
  • ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certifications, where applicable.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing electrical, air-conditioning, and drivetrain systems.
  • Experience using diagnostic scan tools and computerized vehicle systems.

Hiring bonus

Eligible new hires may earn a $4,000 hiring bonus:

  • $1,000 after 30 days of continuous employment.
  • $1,000 after 6 months of continuous employment.
  • $2,000 after one year of continuous employment and completion of all required certifications identified in the offer letter.

The hiring bonus is subject to budget availability, required approvals, and applicable City policy. Current City employees moving between City positions; temporary, seasonal, intern, or part-time employees unless expressly approved; former employees rehired within 24 months of separation; and individuals hired through staffing agencies or other third-party arrangements are not eligible.
