Vacancies are in the Traffic Division of the Operations Bureau of the Police Department. This is routing safety work in safeguarding school children against street crossing hazards. The work involves responsibility for the safety of school children at an assigned street crossing for a designated number of hours each day the schools are in session. Looks after the safety of children through constant attentiveness and by ensuring that children cross safely at the proper location(s); directs traffic at intersections; maintains discipline among school children when approaching the street intersection; writes reports on accidents, traffic violations and safety hazards. While much of the work is of a routing nature, incumbents must be able to exercise sound and independent judgment in emergencies where danger to life or safety of school children is involved. Performs related work as required.\n* THE PAY FOR THIS POSITION IS A DAILY RATE OF $52.02 - $54.62 . THERE IS NO HOURLY RATE. *\nThis is a SCGA union position.\nS hould be comfortable working in various weather such as rain, hot temperatures, and snow. \nKnowledge, Skills & Abilities\nThe examination will consist of a rating of your training and experience as contained on your application and may also include a written test, an oral test, a performance-based test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The examination is designed to measure\nKnowledge of:\nLaws and ordinances governing traffic \nAbility to: \nGet along well with the public\nControl groups of school children\nUnderstand and carry out oral and written instructions\nDirect light traffic effectively\nQualifications\nOpen to all applicants who meet the following qualifications:\nCompletion of the eighth school grade and some experience in dealing with children. Must be 18 years of age or older. \nAbility to read and write English is preferred.\nPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: \nRequired to walk and stand for the entire shift. Must be able to tolerate exposure to various weather conditions and the noise of heavy traffic on a regular basis. Required to hold a hand-held stop sign in one hand, and a safety light in the other hand for extended periods of time when appropriate. \nIf selected, you will be required to pass a physical examination administered by a City physician, a drug and alcohol screening, and a background check. If appointed, you will serve 3-12 months of probation.
