Our ruggedized solutions can meet the challenges of any industry, providing effective and efficient answers for even the toughest problems.\nWho We’re Looking For\nWe are a dynamic team committed to making the impossible possible. Our staff comes from diverse backgrounds and experience levels, fueling our ethos of collective growth and passion towards our work. We warmly welcome individuals of similar mindset to join our ranks.\nWhat You’ll Be Doing\nAs a Mechanical Engineer, you will be collaborating with an interdisciplinary team focusing on developing reliable robotic and automation systems for a wide variety of real-world commercial products and R&D applications. Projects have ranged from designing cutting-edge stereo cameras to developing entire wheeled vehicles from the ground up for specialized purposes. Carnegie Robotics works on one of the broadest spectrums of products of any robotics company: there are always new challenges to attack.\nWhat Your Day to Day Is\nPerforming engineering tasks across the whole product lifecycle, from initial concept development to supporting fielded products\nDeveloping requirements with customers and peers in exciting new robotics applications where the right solution isn’t obvious\nPerforming concept design and feasibility work to guide leadership in proposals and bidding\nModelling parts and assemblies in CAD (Solidworks) both for concept development and detailed sensor and mechanism design\nDesigning mechanisms with multiple degrees of freedom\nIdentifying mechanical risks in design and modelling failures and solutions using hand calculations, spreadsheets, programs (like Python scripts), FEA (Ansys) and CFD simulations\nCreating drawings for manufacturing using GD&T, working with suppliers to improve design for manufacturability\nWorking with engineering technicians to quickly prototype in-house, using Carnegie’s waterjet, lasercutter, mill, lathe, sheet metal tools, welding equipment, and 3D printer farm\nCollaborating with software, electrical and systems engineers. The office space, test facilities, production floor, and high bay vehicle assembly spaces are all under one roof\nTesting sensors, components and subassemblies in on-site lab equipment like thermal chambers and a vibration table. Preparing test reports for internal and customer use\nWorking with production technicians and engineers to transition prototype products to production validated builds\nPreparing and presenting product reports as needed for management, suppliers, and customers\nTravelling occasionally (5% of time or less) to support on-site testing of systems\nPerforming other duties as assigned\nWhat You’ll Have\nBachelor’s Degree in Engineering, preferably mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or a related field \nProduct design background, including design work that integrates mechanisms and electronics\nExperience working with Software and Electrical Engineers to design, develop, and test products\nStrong ability with CAD tools (SolidWorks is preferred)\nSolid background in engineering analysis including bearing life, motor loads, material selection, static and dynamic load cases\nExperience doing COTS trade studies and make-versus-buy decisions\nA strong sense of personal accountability and initiative\nAbility to thrive in an independent environment \nStrong understanding of mechanisms and the tradeoffs between cost, weight, reliability, lead time and complexity\nWritten and presentation skills required to communicate to external customers and internally to teammates\nAuthorization to work for any US employer. The company is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.\nHow You’ll Stand Out\nHave a propensity to build and test things on your own time, exhibiting a deep interest in engineering design and analysis both in the office and at home\nIdeal candidates will have seen robotics and mechanical challenges before and will additionally have: Experience with passive thermal design & analysis, environmental sealing, FEA, and custom gear trains\nFamiliarity with GD&T drawings, BOM management, and releasing products to a production group\nWorking knowledge of at least one programming language\nExperience in production-level design and testing methods\n\nWhat You'll Get Out Of It\nUPMC health coverage with FSA or HSA options\nComprehensive dental, vision, and life insurance\nFidelity 401(k) plan with employer match\nFree catered lunch every day with a vegan option\n31 Days of PTO (including holidays)\nComp time for company travel\nCarnegie Robotics is an Equal Opportunity Employer that welcomes applications from all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, marital status, or status as a covered veteran in accordance with applicable laws and Carnegie Robotics’ employment policies.","description_format":"text","description_chars":5038,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Life insurance"],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Robotic Components & Sensors","Robotic Software & Control Systems"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-06T10:47:16Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":10,"band":"cold","label":"Long shot","p_open":1,"p_active":0.366,"p_room":0.28,"age_days":90,"expected_fill_days":28,"reasons":["conf:2","win:tail","crowd:junior"],"computed_at":"2026-10-26T05:57:25Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/carnegie-robotics-mechanical-engineer-i","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/carnegie-robotics-mechanical-engineer-i.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-26T12:51:55Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":17736,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-27T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":177020},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=177020"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fcarnegie-robotics-mechanical-engineer-i"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fcarnegie-robotics-mechanical-engineer-i"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fcarnegie-robotics-mechanical-engineer-i"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/carnegie-robotics-mechanical-engineer-i\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fcarnegie-robotics-mechanical-engineer-i"}]}
