The ideal candidate is equally comfortable working in a laboratory, around production inspection systems, and behind a computer analyzing large volumes of ultrasonic data. Someone who is motivated by pushing the limits of defect detection and redefining what is possible in ultrasonic inspection technology.\nResearch & Technology Development\nDesign, execute, and analyze experimental programs focused on improving immersion ultrasonic inspection sensitivity.\nDevelop and validate novel ultrasonic testing methodologies capable of detecting increasingly smaller defects and inclusions.\nInvestigate advanced technologies including focused immersion probes, phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT), FMC/TFM imaging, multi-probe systems, and differential signal processing techniques.\nEvaluate emerging NDT technologies and benchmark performance against industry best practices.\nPlan and conduct laboratory and production-scale experiments using immersion ultrasonic systems.\nAnalyze ultrasonic signals using advanced statistical, mathematical, and digital signal processing techniques.\nDevelop algorithms and data analysis methods to improve signal-to-noise ratio and defect characterization.\nUtilize software tools such as Python, MATLAB, Minitab, or equivalent platforms for data analysis and modeling.\nEstablish detection thresholds and quantify capability for critical defect sizes.\nWork with equipment suppliers and internal stakeholders to evaluate new probes, transducers, instrumentation, and scanning systems.\nDesign test methods, calibration standards, and validation procedures for new inspection technologies.\nSupport installation, integration, and optimization of experimental and production ultrasonic equipment.\nRecommend future technology investments and equipment roadmaps.\nCollaborate with Quality, Manufacturing, Metallurgy, Product Development, and Process Engineering teams.\nProvide subject matter expertise in ultrasonic testing and NDT technologies.\nDevelop technical reports, presentations, specifications, and standard operating procedures.\nSupport intellectual property generation through invention disclosures, patents, and technical publications.\nCandidate must obtain Carpenter UT Level 3 certification within 2 years of start date.\nQualification & Commercialization\nValidate inspection methodologies for aerospace, automotive, medical, energy, and other critical applications.\nDevelop technical specifications and acceptance criteria for next-generation inspection processes.\nSupport transfer of successful technologies from R&D into production environments.\nEducation and/or Training:\nRequired Qualifications\nBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, NDT Engineering, or related discipline.\nMinimum 5 years of experience in Metallurgy, ultrasonic testing, NDT, signal processing, materials characterization, or experimental engineering.\nExperience designing and executing technical experiments.\nStrong analytical and problem-solving skills.\nExperience with statistical analysis and data interpretation.\nKnowledge of ultrasonic wave propagation, flaw detection, and inspection system calibration.\nProficiency with data analysis tools such as Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or equivalent.\nPreferred Qualifications\nMaster's or Ph.D. in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline.\nASNT Level II or Level III certification in Ultrasonic Testing.\nExperience with immersion ultrasonic testing systems.\nExperience with phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT), FMC, or Total Focusing Method (TFM).\nKnowledge of signal processing, machine learning, or AI applications in NDT.\nExperience inspecting bars, billets, forgings, aerospace alloys, or specialty metals.\nFamiliarity with ASTM, AMS, Nadcap, aerospace, or medical material inspection requirements.\nPatent, publication, or technology commercialization experience.\nCarpenter Technology Company offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package including life, medical, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, disability coverage, 401k with company contributions as well as many other options to employees.\nCarpenter Technology Corporation’s policy is to fully and effectively maintain a program of equal employment opportunity and nondiscrimination for all employees, to employ affirmative action for all protected classes, and to recruit and develop the best qualified persons available regardless of age, race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, political affiliation or any other characteristic protected by law.
