Building on its history of innovation, Carpenter Technology’s wrought and powder technology capabilities support a range of next-generation products and manufacturing techniques, including novel magnetic materials and additive manufacturing.\nPosition Title: Quality Chemical Laboratory Technician I\nJob Description Summary:\nThe Quality Chemical Laboratory Technician I is an entry-level laboratory position responsible for preparing steel, alloy, and slag specimens for testing and performing routine chemical analyses using instrumental methods. This role supports quality and production operations by ensuring accurate sample preparation, specimen tracking, laboratory testing, and equipment maintenance. Working under the direction of experienced laboratory personnel, the technician follows established procedures to deliver timely and reliable analytical results while maintaining a safe and organized work environment.\nWhat you'll Do:\nPrepare steel, alloy, and slag specimens for chemical analysis using laboratory sample preparation equipment.\nInspect incoming test specimens for quality and suitability, rejecting unacceptable samples, and coordinating replacement samples as needed.\nOperate laboratory equipment including abrasive saws, belt and disk sanders, horizontal grinders, drill presses, and other sample preparation machinery.\nRegister and track test specimens within the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).\nPerform routine chemical analyses on furnace and product samples using carbon/sulfur (C/S) combustion instruments and nitrogen/oxygen (N/O) fusion analyzers under supervision.\nReview test data and apply appropriate corrections using established procedures and reference materials.\nMaintain accurate laboratory records and ensure proper sample identification, retention, and disposal according to standard operating procedures.\nConduct routine preventive maintenance on laboratory and sample preparation equipment, including cleaning dust collection systems, removing sludge buildup, sharpening drill bits, and replacing worn abrasives.\nFollow all safety policies, quality standards, and environmental requirements.\nCollaborate with team members to support laboratory objectives and production schedules.\nParticipate in training and development activities to achieve full qualification within the role.\nPerform other duties and special projects as assigned.\nRequired qualifications:\nHigh School Diploma or GED.\nAbility to learn and perform chemical laboratory testing procedures through structured training.\nAbility to operate computers and related software used for laboratory instruments and LIMS systems.\nMechanical aptitude to operate laboratory equipment and perform routine maintenance.\nAbility to work in a fast-paced, production-oriented environment.\nStrong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate results.\nAbility to follow established procedures, work instructions, and safety protocols.\nEffective verbal and written communication skills.\nAbility to prioritize tasks, manage workload, and meet deadlines.\nAbility to work independently and as part of a team.\nAbility to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.\nCommitment to maintaining a safe work environment.\nPreferred qualifications:\nAssociate degree, technical certification, or coursework in Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Materials Science, Metallurgy, or a related field.\nPrevious laboratory, manufacturing, quality, or industrial experience.\nExperience operating analytical laboratory equipment.\nFamiliarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).\nBasic understanding of chemical testing methods and laboratory best practices.\nExposure to statistical analysis concepts and data interpretation.\nExperience working with steel, metals, alloys, or related industrial materials.\nExperience performing preventive maintenance on laboratory or production equipment.\nKnowledge of quality systems and standard operating procedures in a manufacturing environment.\nCarpenter Technology Company offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package including life, medical, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, disability coverage, 401k with company contributions as well as many other options to employees.\nCarpenter Technology Corporation’s policy is to fully and effectively maintain a program of equal employment opportunity and nondiscrimination for all employees, to employ affirmative action for all protected classes, and to recruit and develop the best qualified persons available regardless of age, race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, political affiliation or any other characteristic protected by law.
