Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling

The Counselor Education and School Psychology (CESP) Programs at Plymouth State University invite applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling, beginning August 2027.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative faculty committed to preparing ethical, reflective, and skilled helping professionals. Responsibilities include teaching graduate courses, advising and mentoring students, engaging in university and professional service, and developing and maintaining an active research and scholarship agenda consistent with the Boyer Model. The standard workload is 70% teaching, 15% service, and 15% research and scholarship. Summer teaching on an overload basis is optional.

About Counselor Education and School Psychology

The Counselor Education and School Psychology Programs prepare future helping professionals to enter their chosen professions with confidence, ethical grounding, strong critical-thinking skills, and a commitment to lifelong growth. Our programs emphasize evidence-informed practice, personal and professional wellness, advocacy, culturally responsive practice, and collaborative goal setting that honors the personal and cultural contexts, values, and beliefs of those we serve.

CESP faculty equip, support, and challenge students to develop the knowledge and skills needed for professional practice in a rapidly changing world. We integrate evidence-informed and data-driven decision making with real-world professional and ethical applications, while emphasizing personal growth and a wellness-oriented mindset throughout the curriculum.

Our predominantly in-person learning environment emphasizes active engagement, reflection, collaboration, and practical application. Students learn through independent work, group projects, discussion, presentations, and innovative hands-on experiences, including the use of actors and pre-practicum field experiences. Faculty mentor students throughout their graduate experience and strive to create a learning environment that recognizes individual strengths, encourages growth, and challenges students to reach their highest potential.

Community partnerships, professional collaborations, and interdisciplinary learning further enrich the educational experience. The Programs regularly seek feedback from students, alumni, adjunct faculty, and community partners and use that feedback, along with other program data, to evaluate and continuously improve our curriculum and educational practices.

The CESP Programs offer master's, Education Specialist, and professional certification programs with concentrations in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, and School Psychology. The Counselor Education Programs enroll more than 100 students across the Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling programs and Dual program (CMHC and SC). Both programs are CACREP-accredited, and the School Counseling Program is currently the only CACREP-accredited school counseling program in New Hampshire. Additional certificate offerings include play therapy, addictions treatment, and organizational leadership.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

• Teach graduate courses in the Counselor Education Programs, including courses in the CACREP core and Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialization.

• Advise, mentor, and support graduate counseling students throughout their academic and professional development.

• Establish and maintain an active program of research and scholarship consistent with the Boyer Model.

• Participate in university, professional, and community service activities.

• Develop and sustain collaborative relationships with counselors, clinical mental health agencies, and other community partners throughout New Hampshire.

• Contribute to curriculum development, program evaluation, and continuous improvement.

• Incorporate evidence-informed practices, critical thinking, and real-world professional applications into teaching and student learning.

• Support innovative, experiential, and interdisciplinary approaches to counselor education.

• Contribute to a learning environment that promotes personal growth, wellness, ethical practice, advocacy, and respect for individual and cultural differences.

Minimum Qualifications

• Doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP-accredited institution, conferred by August 1, 2027.

• Professional experience and expertise in clinical mental health counseling.

• NCC eligibility and eligibility for clinical mental health counseling licensure.

• Demonstrated potential for excellence in graduate teaching.

• Demonstrated ability or potential to establish an active research and scholarship agenda.

• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

• Demonstrated ability to advise, mentor, and support graduate students.

• Understanding and commitment to ethical and culturally responsive counseling practice.

• Commitment to social justice, advocacy, and respect for diverse perspectives, identities, values, and lived experiences.

• Competence with instructional technology and innovative course delivery strategies.

• Commitment to evidence-informed practice, critical thinking, and continuous professional growth.

• Expertise and professional experience in clinical mental health counseling are required.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

• Two or more years of successful graduate-level teaching experience.

• Active involvement in professional counseling organizations.

• Established research agenda with evidence of scholarly productivity and peer-reviewed publications.

• School counseling experience and/or expertise working with children and adolescents.

• Experience developing or maintaining partnerships with clinical mental health agencies or community organizations.

• Experience with experiential, hands-on, or innovative approaches to counselor education.

• Experience with interdisciplinary collaboration or community-engaged learning.

• Experience as a school counselor is preferred.

Compensation Pay Range

$68,000.00 - $95,000.00

Academic Year (20 Pay Periods)
