Individuals with high emotional intelligence, humility and openness to discovery will thrive in the teams we are building.\nJob Summary:\nThe Advanced Motor Technology team is seeking a Design Engineering Specialist - Electromagnetic Design to provide technical leadership for the electromagnetic design, analysis, and optimization of Caterpillar's electric motor and generator portfolio.\nThis position will serve as a recognized technical expert responsible for developing next-generation electromagnetic solutions supporting electrified machine platforms across construction, mining, industrial, and power applications. The successful candidate will lead electromagnetic technology development activities spanning concept creation, architecture selection, detailed design, validation, manufacturing support, and product integration.\nThe role requires close collaboration with mechanical design, controls, validation, manufacturing, supply chain, and product teams to deliver electric machine solutions that achieve best-in-class performance, efficiency, durability,\nmanufacturability, and cost.\nWhat You Will Do:\nTechnical Leadership\nServe as the technical authority for electromagnetic design of electric motors and generators, establishing architectures, design strategies, and technical direction for current and future machine platforms.\nDrive performance targets including efficiency, power density, torque density, losses, reliability, and overall system optimization while guiding key technology and architecture decisions.\nMentor and develop engineering talent, strengthening organizational capability in electromagnetic analysis, machine design, and advanced simulation methods.\nElectromagnetic Design & Analysis\nLead the electromagnetic design, analysis, and optimization of electric machines using analytical, simulation-based, and test-correlated methods across IPM, SPM, synchronous reluctance, switched reluctance, and induction machine topologies.\nConduct trade studies and detailed evaluations of torque production, efficiency, losses, flux behavior, harmonics, demagnetization risk, NVH excitation, and fault performance to support design decisions.\nOptimize machine designs for performance, manufacturability, reliability, and cost while validating results through motor characterization, testing, and correlation with experimental data.\nTechnology Development\nLead New Technology Introduction (NTI) initiatives by evaluating emerging motor and generator technologies and developing roadmaps that support future product requirements.\nAdvance machine performance through improvements in efficiency, power density, thermal capability, material utilization, and innovative electromagnetic design approaches.\nDevelop and enhance in-house design tools, automation capabilities, and optimization methods utilizing MATLAB, Python, and design-space exploration techniques to accelerate technology maturation from concept to production.\nProduct Development & Integration\nPartner with mechanical, thermal, controls, systems, manufacturing, and validation teams to deliver integrated electric machine solutions from concept through production launch.\nProvide expertise in magnetic materials, including magnet selection, electrical steel evaluation, supplier data validation, and cost-performance optimization.\nSupport prototype development, validation, supplier engagement, sourcing decisions, and resolution of complex technical issues throughout the product lifecycle.\nWhat You Will Have:\nBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or related engineering discipline.\nAnalytical Thinking: Extensive experience and knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.\nEffective Communications: Extensive experience and understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors. Ability to communicate complex technical concepts and recommendations to technical and leadership audiences\nProject Management: Extensive experience and knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.\nProduct Development Life Cycle - MFG: Extensive experience and knowledge of the methodology and associated phases, activities and deliverables of product development life cycle in manufacturing organizations; ability to bring new or enhanced products to the marketplace. Experience leading engineering activities through concept development, validation, and production implementation.\nTroubleshooting Technical Problems: Extensive experience and knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing or product development environment.\nDemonstrated expertise in electric machine theory, motor and generator design, electromagnetic analysis, and machine optimization. \nDemonstrated experience collaborating with power electronics and controls teams on inverter constraints, flux weakening strategies, MTPA/MTPV control maps, switching schemes, and performance map development.\nTop Candidates will Have:\nMaster's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering with emphasis in electric machines, electromagnetics, or power conversion.\nDeep expertise in permanent magnet machine design, particularly Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) architectures.\nExperience with JMAG, ANSYS Maxwell, Motor-CAD, Flux, MagNet, or equivalent simulation platforms.\nExpertise in: Electromagnetic optimization, Rotor and stator design, Magnet selection and retention systems, Flux barrier design, Harmonic mitigation, Demagnetization analysis, NVH prediction and mitigation, Thermal-electromagnetic coupled analysis\nExperience supporting heavy-duty off-highway, mining, industrial, traction, or high-power electric machine applications.\nExperience transitioning technologies from NTI to NPI programs.\nDemonstrated ability to mentor engineers and build technical capability within an organization.\nAdditional Details:\nThis position is located in Mossville, IL or Noblesville, IN and requires 5-day a week on-site avaliability\nDomestic relocation is available for this role\nVisa sponsorship is not available for this role\nTravel is expected up to 20% of the time\nSummary Pay Range:\n$128,470.00 - $192,710.00Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-relatedknowledge, skills, individual performance and experience.
