Cat Technology collaborates with partners across the Caterpillar enterprise to advance technologies including autonomy and automation, which helps enhance site safety, productivity and efficiency across customer operations worldwide. Cat Technology also owns enterprise-wide initiatives in innovation, research and development, manufacturing automation and advanced materials, ensuring Caterpillar continues to lead the industry in technological excellence and engineering innovation.

MineStar is Caterpillar’s integrated suite of mining technology, helping surface and underground mines around the world operate more safely, productively, and predictably. Spanning fleet management, machine guidance, equipment health, safety detection, and autonomous hauling, drilling, and dozing, MineStar connects machines, people, and data across the mine site. The MineStar Office product suite is the software mine operators use to plan, monitor, and manage these operations.

The MineStar Solution Architect is a hands-on architecture leader for the MineStar Office product suite, bridging application design and software delivery. This role produces clear, high-quality architecture designs and works alongside engineering teams to deliver aligned, pragmatic, and scalable outcomes. Unlike a purely conceptual or governance-led role, the Solution Architect brings deep engineering credibility, working close to the code and implementation to ensure architecture decisions are practical, executable, and valuable.

Additional Information:

  • Location: Dallas, TX (United States)
  • Required Travel: Up to 15% (Domestic & International)
  • Relocation Assistance Offered: Domestic
  • US Work Sponsorship Offered: None

What You Will Do:

  • Technical Direction & Roadmap
    • Align MineStar Office technical direction with Caterpillar enterprise strategy.
    • Lead the creation and ongoing maintenance of the technical roadmap for the MineStar Office product suite.
    • Partner with other Caterpillar product lines to propose and deliver cross-product solution designs.
    • Support commercial teams with solution direction and effort/lifecycle estimates for new features.
  • Application Architecture
    • Define and own application architectures that are scalable, maintainable, and secure.
    • Make sure non-functional requirements (security, performance, availability) are designed in from the start.
    • Apply strong engineering judgment to balance delivery speed with long-term sustainability.
    • Review implementation approaches, including detailed design and code-level decisions where appropriate.
  • Architecture Design & Artifacts
    • Produce high-quality design outputs that delivery teams can use directly, including:
      • Application architecture and solution views
      • Logical and physical design models
      • Integration, data flow, and deployment designs
      • Technology selections, trade-offs, and architecture decision records
    • Keep artifacts clear, consistent, and outcome-focused, avoiding unnecessary abstraction.
    • Maintain architecture documentation as living artifacts throughout delivery, not one-off deliverables.
  • Delivery Collaboration & Alignment
    • Work alongside engineering teams to embed architecture into day-to-day delivery.
    • Guide architectural decisions through planning, build, and release so features are delivered in line with the technical roadmap.
    • Partner with product owners, delivery leads, and platform teams to translate business needs into executable designs.
    • Help teams resolve technical constraints, design conflicts, and implementation risks early.
    • Mentor engineers to build architecture and design capability across teams.
  • Standards, Patterns & Practice
    • Apply and evolve standards, patterns, and reference architectures based on real delivery experience.
    • Identify opportunities to simplify, modernize, or rationalize the application landscape, including technical debt reduction.
    • Promote consistency and reuse while allowing flexibility where the context justifies it.

What You Will Have (Basic Requirements):

  • Education Requirement: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Information Technology Trends: Knowledge of marketplace experience, developments and trends related to the organization's use of Information Technology (IT); ability to apply knowledge of IT appropriately to benefit the organization.
  • Planning: Tactical, Strategic: Knowledge of effective planning techniques and ability to contribute to operational (short term), tactical (1-2 years) and strategic (3-5 years) planning in support of the overall business plan.
  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Relationship Management: Knowledge of relationship management techniques; ability to establish and maintain healthy working relationships with clients, vendors, and peers.
  • Cross-Team Integration: Understanding of the importance of inter-team collaboration in breaking down silos and achieving business results; ability to lead employees from various functions to communicate, coordinate work across divisions, and collaborate in solving problems as one team.
  • Technical Leadership & Influence: Knowledge of how to lead through technical credibility rather than positional authority; ability to guide engineering teams, build consensus on design decisions, and mentor engineers to raise architecture capability.
  • Solution Architecture: Knowledge of architecture principles, patterns, and design methods; ability to define scalable, secure, and maintainable application architectures and to communicate trade-offs clearly to technical and business stakeholders.
  • Systems Integration: Knowledge of integration patterns, APIs, data flows, and interoperability across distributed systems; ability to design reliable integrations between products, platforms, and third-party systems.
  • Software Development Life Cycle: Knowledge of software development life cycle; ability to use a structured methodology for delivering and managing new or enhanced software products to the marketplace.

What Will Set You Apart (Top Candidates Will Have):

  • 10+ years of experience in application development, application architecture, or related roles.
  • Strong background in software engineering and application architecture, with demonstrable hands-on experience.
  • Confidence engaging with code, frameworks, APIs, and modern application platforms (including cloud-native patterns).
  • Track record of turning complex, ambiguous requirements into clear, pragmatic designs that teams have successfully delivered.
  • Proven experience bridging architecture and delivery, producing designs that directly enable successful implementation.
  • Trusted technical partner to delivery teams, using credibility rather than authority to influence outcomes.
  • Clear communicator capable of adapting architectural concepts for different audiences.
  • Comfortable working in ambiguous environments and helping teams converge on practical solutions.
  • Experience in mining, industrial, or operational technology (OT) environments is highly regarded.
