The CERN IT Storage and Data Management group operates the core services used by both LHC and non-LHC experiments for data collection, archival, reconstruction, analysis, and global distribution via the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid. Join us to work on core data storage and management capabilities which enable scientific progress at CERN!\nAs a Distributed Storage Engineer, you will contribute to the design, evolution, and operation of large-scale, distributed critical storage services for the CERN cloud and computing infrastructures. You will join a team to work with open-source Ceph-based block, object, and filesystem solutions (including CephFS and NFS integrations), ensuring high availability, performance, and resilience across multi-datacenter environments.\nYour role will involve system-wide troubleshooting in a distributed Linux-based environment and optimising storage architectures for demanding workloads. You will use your C++ software development skills to help identify and troubleshoot issues with the Ceph code base and to contribute code improvements to the upstream open-source Ceph project when necessary.\nYou will have opportunities to learn and contribute to improving automation, deployment, and observability, aligned with modern DevOps practices, to participate in inspiring projects and new technologies such as storage for HPC and AI/ML and to engage with our international partners, participating to conferences and workshops.\nFunctions\nManagement and operations of distributed disk storage, block, object and filesystem services based on mainstream open-source technologies (Ceph)\nParticipate in the evolution of architecture and design of storage services for CERN and software-defined storage technology with Open Source\nIntegrate, troubleshoot and maintain distributed disk storage systems at scale, across multiple availability zones and data centres.\nContribute to documentation, development, optimisation and further automation of storage services.\nContribute to change management, incident response, and user support.\nLiaise with key stakeholders inside and outside of the IT department.\n Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Computer Science or a related field.\nExperience:\nStrong interest in service management, including operations, troubleshooting, user support, configuration and automation\nDeep understanding of Linux operating system performance, tuning and administration\nDeep understanding of architecture of distributed storage and filesystems (e.g. NFS, CephFS)\nDebugging and diagnosing issues in complex distributed environments, spanning hardware, network, and software layers\nDemonstrated experience in C++ software development of distributed storage systems (preferably, but not necessarily, with Ceph source code)\nStrong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with multiple cross-functional teams, users and partners.\nNice-to-have Skills\nGood knowledge of scripting languages (python, shell)\nTechnical competencies:\nDesign of storage systems.\nDevelopment of application software.\nKnowledge of programming techniques and languages.\nKnowledge of storage technologies.\nOperation and maintenance (preventive and corrective) of storage systems.\nBehavioural competencies:\nAchieving Results: delivering prompt and efficient service taking into account customer needs.\nDemonstrating Flexibility: readily absorbing new techniques and working practices; proposing new or improved ways of working.\nSolving Problems: seeking and integrating other points of view when tackling an issue; consulting experts in the field and undertaking benchmarking.\nWorking in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.\nLearning and Sharing Knowledge: seeking feedback from colleagues and other stakeholders about ways of increasing competence.\nLanguage skills:\nSpoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.\n Eligibility and closing date:\nDiversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization.
