CERN is the world’s leading laboratory for particle physics, where scientists study the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces that govern the universe. Located near Geneva, it operates the Large Hadron Collider, the largest and most powerful particle accelerator ever built, to conduct groundbreaking research into the origin of matter. Beyond pure science, the organization is also famous for pioneering technological innovations, including the invention of the World Wide Web, which continue to have a massive global impact.

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Introduction

As a Mechanical CAD Designer in the Superconducting Magnet Technology section, you will develop three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) models and detailed drawings for novel superconducting magnets and associated tooling. Working closely with engineers and other technical specialists, you will take part in research and development projects for future particle accelerators. Your work will help transform innovative magnet concepts into manufacturable prototypes and practical assembly solutions.

Functions

  • Prepare 3D CAD mechanical models and drawings of short magnet demonstrators, prototypes and associated tooling, in close collaboration with other colleagues in the section.
  • Update CAD models and drawings to integrate feedback from construction and assembly activities.
  • Contribute to technical discussions related to mechanical tolerances, machining methods and assembly procedures.
  • Support procurement of components and update CAD models and drawings to reflect as-built configurations.
  • Assist colleagues with tailored 3D models for computer numerical control (CNC) machining and simulations (electromagnetic, mechanical).

Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Proficiency in CATIA (or a similar modern 3D CAD software), including the production of detailed 2D manufacturing and assembly drawings, for mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Experience with a Product Lifecycle Management database (e.g. PLM, Enovia, SmarTeam) to manage models and drawings.
  • Knowledge of mechanical assemblies and ISO-GPS dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Knowledge of superconducting magnet construction and technologies would be an asset.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation.
  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment.
  • Production of 2D drawings and 3D models.
  • Knowledge and application of mechanical measurement techniques.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
  • Demonstrating Accountability: working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises.
  • Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
  • Learning and Sharing Knowledge: sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.

Eligibility and closing date:

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success. We welcome applications from all Member States and Associate Member States.

This vacancy will be filled as soon as possible, and applications should normally reach us no later than 14.10.2026 at 23:59 CEST.

Employment Conditions

Contract type: Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

Working Hours: 40 hours per week

Job Flexibility: Fully Onsite

This position involves:

  • A valid driving licence.
  • Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.

Job grade: 3-4

Job reference: TE-MSC-SMT-2026-195-LD

Field of work: Mechanical Engineering

Benchmark Job Title: Mechanical Technician

Global Benefits

  • A competitive salary (tax free), increasing in line with your years of relevant experience.
  • 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks annual closure.
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health insurance scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Family, child and infant monthly allowances depending on your individual circumstances.
  • A relocation package (installation grant, removal, travel expenses) depending on your individual circumstances.
  • Possibility to extend your contract up to 8 years + eligibility for indefinite contract tenure.
