You will work at the interface between scientific computing, high-performance computing and fusion research, contributing to software used within major European and international fusion programmes. The position offers the opportunity to shape sustainable scientific software and integrated modelling tools with applications ranging from present-day fusion experiments to ITER and future fusion reactors.\nInformation about the research group\nThe Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy (PPFE) group at Chalmers conducts research on the modelling, simulation and analysis of magnetically confined fusion plasmas, with a particular focus on tokamak physics. A major part of the research is aimed at developing predictive capabilities for transport in fusion-relevant plasmas and validating models against experimental observations. The group collaborates with major international fusion facilities and contributes to research supporting ITER and the development of future fusion devices.Modern fusion research increasingly relies on integrated multi-physics simulations that combine plasma transport, equilibrium, heating and current drive, turbulence, MHD stability, plasma-wall interactions, and synthetic diagnostics.\nAt Chalmers, we develop and maintain scientific software, workflows, and data infrastructure that enable modular, scalable, and reproducible fusion simulations. Current activities include development of the European Transport Simulator (ETS), the Transport Code Interfaces (TCI), integrated modelling frameworks based on the ITER Integrated Modelling & Analysis Suite (IMAS), workflow coupling using MUSCLE3, and execution on high-performance computing systems. The activities are closely integrated with the European fusion research programme EUROfusion and with international developments related to ITER.\nJob description\nAs a Research Software Engineer, you will contribute to the development, integration, maintenance, and long-term sustainability of software infrastructure for integrated fusion modelling.\nYour responsibilities will include:\nDevelop, maintain and improve scientific software associated with integrated workflows such as ETS and TCI.\nDevelop coupled multi-physics workflows using IMAS and MUSCLE3.\nIntegrate numerical simulation codes written in Python, C/C++ and Fortran.\nDesign reusable software components, interfaces, APIs and workflow infrastructure.\nDevelop and optimise workflows for high-performance computing environments.\nSupport migration and development of software for current and future versions of the IMAS Data Dictionary and Access Layer.\nApply modern software engineering practices, including automated testing, continuous integration, documentation, version control and code review.\nCollaborate with researchers and software developers within national and European fusion programmes.\nContribute to the development of sustainable and FAIR research software, supporting reproducible computational research.\nSupport users through documentation, training and technical guidance.\nContract terms\nPermanent employment\nQualifications\nApplicants should have:\nA Master’s degree in Computer Science, Scientific Computing, Engineering Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Physics or a related discipline.\nStrong programming skills in Python and experience with C/C++ and/or Fortran.\nExperience in developing scientific or research software.\nExperience with collaborative software development and tools such as Git, automated testing, continuous integration and documentation systems.\nExperience working in Linux environments.\nStrong analytical and problem-solving skills.\nGood written and spoken English.\nExperience in one or more of the following areas is considered an advantage:\nHigh-performance computing, including MPI, OpenMP, GPU programming or distributed computing.\nScientific workflow systems and multi-physics coupling.\nIMAS, including IDSs, the Data Dictionary and Access Layer.\nMUSCLE3 or similar workflow-coupling frameworks.\nIntegrated modelling for magnetic-confinement fusion.\nContainer technologies such as Docker or Apptainer.\nHDF5 and other scientific data formats.\nFAIR research software and data, provenance and research data management.\nEUROfusion or ITER software environments.\nNumerical modelling of plasma transport, equilibrium, turbulence, MHD, heating and current drive, or plasma-material interactions.\nDevelopment of or contributions to open-source scientific software.\nExperience with the European Transport Simulator (ETS) or Transport Code Interfaces (TCI).\nWhat we offer\nChalmers provides a cultivating and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of https://www.goteborg.com/en/. \n\nRead more about https://www.chalmers.se/en/about-chalmers/work-with-us/chalmers-as-an-employer/and our https://www.chalmers.se/en/about-chalmers/work-with-us/chalmers-as-an-employer/benefits-and-conditions/ for employees.\n\nChalmers aims to actively improve our gender balance.
