Job Summary

The Associate Director, CPD leads specific initiatives that advance UBC CPD’s mandate in support of the Director, CPD, Associate Dean, CPD, and portfolio leads, including the strategic management of accreditation and program standards across the division.

Key priorities for the role include advancing partnership engagement, business development, national and international strategic initiatives, accreditation and program standards, and leading assigned initiatives and projects that advance UBC CPD’s mandate. The Associate Director, CPD is a member of the UBC CPD leadership team, participating in the development of long-term strategic planning and leading identified partnership engagement activities to enhance quality, reach, and sustainability of CPD programming.

The Associate Director also plays a key role in building cross-functional alignment across UBC CPD’s diverse portfolios, ensuring consistent standards, shared practices, and collaborative planning to realize cross-functional strategic opportunities. The position strengthens leadership capacity by supervising assigned staff and by providing cross-portfolio mentorship and indirect leadership to a large team of staff and clinical leads operating across multiple functional areas.

Organizational Status

UBC Continuing Professional Development (UBC CPD) is a large, complex academic unit, situated within the Office of the Vice Dean Education of the Faculty of Medicine. UBC CPD advances the field of continuing professional development (CPD) through the design, delivery, accreditation, evaluation and research of lifelong learning opportunities for health professionals in British Columbia and beyond. UBC CPD is a strategic partner to numerous provincial and national health organizations and has local, national and international reach, with a growing, engaged community of over 150,000 learners.

The Associate Director, CPD is responsible for multiple strategic initiatives and for providing oversight and guidance for assigned CPD programs. The role strengthens leadership capacity across the unit and supports cross-portfolio integration, supporting the Director, CPD in leading a large and expanding staff through organizational growth and increasing program complexity.

The Associate Director, CPD reports to the Director, CPD and works closely with the Associate Dean, CPD and Senior Managers within the UBC CPD team.

Work Performed

Strategic Leadership and Planning

• Supports development, implementation and monitoring of the UBC CPD strategic plan, identifying emerging institutional opportunities, risks, and directions in line with UBC CPD and Faculty of Medicine priorities
• Leads development, execution, and oversight of assigned strategic initiatives that advance long term goals for UBC CPD and the broader Faculty of Medicine
• Advises on strategic initiatives related to national and international engagement, new market exploration, and program innovation, ensuring alignment with Faculty and University priorities.
• Conducts comprehensive environmental scans, competitive analyses, and needs assessments to inform strategic recommendations and future planning.
• Identifies and defines strategic priority areas of significant complexity within assigned portfolios, integrating multi-stakeholder perspectives and system-level considerations.
• Proactively anticipates emerging issues, risks, and opportunities; advises on strengthening CPD’s strategic positioning and operational resilience.

Cross-Portfolio Cohesion & Internal Leadership

• Strengthens alignment, collaboration, and information flow across CPD portfolios to support cohesive processes, shared priorities, and coordinated implementation.
• Works in partnership with portfolio leads to harmonize planning cycles, quality standards, evaluation frameworks, and communication workflows across the unit.
• Enhances leadership capacity within CPD by offering strategic guidance, mentorship, and support for emerging leaders, fostering cross-team problem-solving and effective decision-making.
• Contributes to a positive, connected, and inclusive organizational culture that supports staff learning, engagement, and inter-team cohesion.
• Leads organizational change initiatives by developing shared vision, facilitating collaboration, and modeling collegial, consultative leadership across all levels of the unit.

Global Initiatives:

• Develops, implements, and evaluates strategies that strengthen and expand UBC CPD’s international presence and impact, ensuring alignment with Faculty and University priorities.
• Represents UBC CPD in discussions with global partners, institutions, networks, and professional bodies.
• Establishes and advances international collaborations that align with UBC values, policies, risk frameworks, and academic standards.

Partnership Development & Business Growth:

• Leads proactive outreach and relationship-building with local, provincial, national, and international partners to identify and secure education projects, joint initiatives, and funding opportunities.
• Oversees the identification, assessment, and cultivation of partnership opportunities
• Leads the development of proposals, financial models, risk analyses, and negotiation strategies for assigned initiatives.
• Builds and maintains strong relationships with government bodies, healthcare organizations, academic institutions, and industry stakeholders.
• Supports complex, multi-stakeholder collaborations to advance sustainability, growth and innovation.

Strategic Contract & Intellectual Property (IP) Management:

• Develops strategy for the development, negotiation, and lifecycle monitoring of IP and contracts, including complex agreements with external collaborators.
• Ensures all agreements comply with UBC policies, accreditation standards, ethical guidelines, and applicable regulations.

Accreditation & Program Standards Oversight:

• Oversees accreditation operations and quality assurance processes to maintain compliance with Royal College, CFPC, UBC, and other regulatory requirements.
• Provides guidance to faculty, staff, and partners on evolving accreditation frameworks and leads continuous improvement of standards and processes.
• Advises on accreditation-related risks and governance considerations.

Project Leadership:

• Leads cross-functional projects aligned with the CPD strategic plan, including scope development, timeline management, budgeting, risk mitigation, and evaluation.
• Facilitates collaboration across units to ensure coordinated, integrated execution of initiatives. Consequence of Error/Judgement The Associate Director will exercise considerable judgment and initiative in establishing priorities and carrying tasks through to completion, and must demonstrate tact and discretion, including delegation of responsibilities and decision making. Errors in judgment, mismanagement of partnerships, or failure to maintain program standards and compliance may result in reputational harm, financial loss, or regulatory consequences. A high degree of professionalism, discretion, and strategic foresight is required. Supervision Received Works independently, reporting to the Director, CPD. Work is reviewed in terms of achievement of broad long-term goals. This position provides advice and works in partnership with the Associate Dean, CPD and Director, CPD in achieving strategic priorities for UBC CPD. Works with broad latitude within established frameworks; receives broad directives from the Director, CPD. Supervision Given Provides supervision and direction to staff in the Accreditation and Program Standards portfolio and oversees project teams and contractors. Provides mentorship, guidance, and performance feedback. Minimum Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Preferred Qualifications

• A Master’s degree in health administration, business, education, public health, or a related discipline is strongly preferred.
• Related experience in continuing professional development, health or higher-education administration, program leadership, business development is an asset
• Proven leadership experience supporting teams, guiding cross-functional projects, and managing complex portfolios.
• Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with strength in diplomacy, negotiation, and relationship management across diverse settings.
• Demonstrated experience leading strategic partnership development, including international collaborations and multi-stakeholder initiatives.
• Strong working knowledge of CPD accreditation standards (e.g., Royal College, CFPC) and familiarity with relevant regulatory, governance, and quality-assurance environments.
• Experience negotiating, managing, and monitoring contracts, including intellectual property considerations, licensing arrangements, and industry or government partnerships.
• Experience leading within complex post-secondary or health-system environments.
• Advanced analytical capabilities, including financial modelling, risk assessment, and strategic planning.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within complex organizational structures and to influence without formal authority.
