Job Summary

The Research Assistant will provide support to research projects related to harm reduction and substance use services. This will include attending monthly meetings focused on stimulant use research priorities. They will also support preparing knowledge translation materials, including presentations, reports, and scientific journal articles.

Organizational Status

Reports to Senior Scinetist, Harm reduction and substance use services at the BC Centre for Disease Control, who is also a Professor (Partner) at the UBC School of Population and Public Health. Works closely with other investigators, research staff, and graduate trainees working on the same group of projects at SFU, UBC, BCCDC, and other partner agencies.

Work Performed

Prepares exposure and health outcomes data for epidemiologic analyses.

  • Conducts literature review.

  • Assists in the writing and preparation of scientific manuscripts.

  • Assists in the preparation of scientific and knowledge translation presentations.

  • Attends regular project meetings.

  • Engages with other project partners.

  • Identifies issues with project and suggests solutions.

  • Develops timelines to ensure tasks are completed on time, reports on progress, and troubleshoots to ensure deadlines are met.

  • May be asked to participate in other ongoing studies.

  • Any other duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Research Assistant must be exceptionally detail-orientated and organized and able to follow detailed instructions. They must be able to prioritize tasks to ensure that time-sensitive duties are completed in priority. This person must also be self-directed, able to excel in a team environment, know personal limitations and take initiative to ask for assistance when needed.

Supervision Received

Work under general supervision of the Senior Scientist or delegate, receiving detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and oversight thereafter.

Supervision Given

This person will not be required to supervise other staff

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of harm reduction and treatment services for substance use

  • Some knowledge of quantitative research methods applicable to health research. Strong attention to detail, organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks, adapt to changing priorities, multi-task and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to learn new software, research methods, and work routines.

  • Ability to exercise appropriate tact, discretion and confidentiality in all matters.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgement, responsibility, and maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to work effectively independently and within a collaborative team environment.
