Connect with a career that matters.\nNetwork Solution Engineer\n(Optical Engineer)\nWork Location: Onsite at Vandenberg Space Force Base (This is not a remote position)\nCiena Government Solutions Inc. (CGSI) is seeking a talented Network Solutions Engineer to join our team and provide onsite support for a key customer and project. In this role, you will take the lead in designing, coordinating, and executing test plans to ensure seamless implementation and interoperability of Ciena products within the customer’s legacy network. Additionally, you will serve as the local subject matter expert (SME), contributing to standards development, interpreting customer requirements, and guiding network modernization efforts.\nYou will report to the Senior Manager while working closely with the Project Manager and Sales Account Manager responsible for this customer account.\nHow You Will Contribute:\nCollaborate with customers and stakeholders to understand project requirements and provide support for network architecture design and implementation.\n\nDevelop and execute test plans to validate equipment functionality, interoperability, security, and performance based on customer requirements.\n\nTranslate test results into actionable implementation plans and provide expert engineering support during deployment, including Layer-0, Layer-1, and Layer-2 (Layer-3 experience is a plus).\n\nPerform pre-commissioning activities in customer labs or staging facilities, including:\nConducting equipment inventory assessments against the final Ciena Bill of Materials (BOM).\n\nInitial commissioning of Ciena systems based on provided documentation.\n\nSupport greenfield network implementation by commissioning equipment, optimizing span/channel parameters, and ensuring seamless deployment.\n\nTurn up network services following Ciena best practices, including performing end-to-end circuit testing to ensure error-free operation.\n\nPerform basic electrical tasks and determine when specialized contractors are required.\n\nProvide customer guidance and operational training on Ciena Network Management Systems (NMS), including tasks such as:\nEnrolling network elements.\n\nCreating device profiles.\n\nConfiguring backups.\n\nProvisioning services.\n\nEscalate and resolve issues with Ciena platforms in accordance with Ciena procedures.\n\nCollaborate with customer and internal technical teams to analyze optical performance and escalate anomalies to appropriate stakeholders.\n\nDeliver accurate documentation for configuration, provisioning, and testing results as part of project deliverables.\n\nThe Must Haves:\nU.S. Citizenship is required.\n\nActive Secret Security Clearance (Top Secret Preferred)\n\nAbility to work independently (self-starter) and in a team environment.\n\nExcellent communication and presentation skills.\n\nExperience with Ciena products.\n\nStrong understanding of:\nSONET, DWDM, ROADM/nOADM architecture, and provisioning/implementation.\n\nEthernet architecture, provisioning, and implementation.\n\nIP/MPLS/L3 protocols, including MPLS-TP.\n\nFamiliarity with Network Management Systems (NMS), including Ciena MCP/Navigator.\n\n10+ years of experience with low-speed network access interfaces and terminations (e.g., sub-T-1, DS0, T1, E-1, DS-3, OC-3, OC-12, OC-48).\n\nKnowledge of fiber optics, including:\nISP (patches and connectors).\n\nOSP (fiber characterization and OTDR familiarity).\n\nAbility to work in a lab environment. Read/follow network diagrams, cabling guides, signal flow diagrams.\n\nA diverse Telecommunications background, strong hands-on technical experience, organizational and interpersonal skills.\n\nWillingness to assist team members with other projects as required.\n\nBachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Networking, or a related technical field (equivalent experience in a related field will be considered in lieu of a degree).\n\nWillingness to travel up to 25%.\n\nPreferred Experience:\nHands-on expertise with Ciena 6500 DWDM/OTN and Route Switch platforms, including experience with:\nCiena Site Manager.\n\nMCP/Navigator software.\n\nService-Aware Operating System (SAOS).\n\nExperience with legacy SONET and TDM systems, including circuits such as OCx, DS1, and DS3, as well as TDM BER testing practices and test plan development.\n\nProven ability to troubleshoot and optimize network performance in both lab and field environments.\n\nProficiency in documenting network configurations, including:\nRack face diagrams.\n\nSignal flow diagrams.\n\nCable run lists.\n\nMigration cut sheets.\n\nAs-built network diagrams for customer deliverables.\n\nAbility to provide customer training on operational use of Ciena Site Manager and Navigator, including:\nEnrolling network elements.\n\nCreating device profiles.\n\nConfiguring backups.\n\nProvisioning services.\n\nPerforming software upgrades.\n\nTroubleshooting network issues.\n\nAnalyzing network performance and conducting maintenance activities.\n\nPay Range:\nThe annual pay range for this position in California is $114,600 - $183,000.\nPay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business. Please note that the pay range information provided in this posting pertains specifically to the primary location, which is the top location listed in case multiple locations are available.\nNon-Sales employees may be eligible for a discretionary incentive bonus, while Sales employees may be eligible for a sales commission.
