We’re looking for a Senior Java Backend Developer to join a CI&T squad working on a financial services client. You’ll help modernise an established Java web platform. That means building new services and APIs, keeping the existing platform stable, and gradually moving legacy functionality onto a cleaner architecture. You’ll work closely with frontend developers, QA, a Product Owner and a Tech Lead, using agile practices.
What you’ll do
- Design, build and maintain backend services and RESTful APIs in Java
- Write clean, testable code with good unit and integration test coverage using JUnit
- Model data and write efficient SQL against Oracle DB, and tune queries, indexes and transactions
- Understand, maintain and refactor legacy modules, including XSLT-rendered pages, and help plan their migration
- Join refinement sessions: break features down into technical tasks, estimate them and raise risks early
- Review pull requests and help keep coding standards and technical documentation in good shape
- Work with DevOps and QA on build pipelines, deployments and production support
- Help investigate and fix incidents across environments
What you need (must-have)
- Around 5 years of professional experience in backend development with Java (Java 11+, ideally 17/21)
- Solid automated testing skills with JUnit, plus mocking frameworks such as Mockito
- Hands-on experience with Maven: multi-module projects, dependency management and build lifecycle
- Experience building Java web applications: REST APIs, JSON/XML handling, HTTP and request/response lifecycle
- Good knowledge of a Java application framework (Spring Boot, Jakarta EE or similar) and persistence with JPA/Hibernate
- A solid grasp of object-oriented design, SOLID principles and common design patterns
- Experience with Git, branching strategies and pull request workflows
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI or Azure DevOps)
- Experience working in agile teams (Scrum or Kanban)
- Good English communication skills for working with international stakeholders
Nice to have
- Quarkus, or other cloud-native Java frameworks
- Apache Kafka: producers, consumers, topics and event-driven design
AWS S3, and AWS services in general
- Maintaining or migrating legacy pages built with XSLT (and XML/XPath)
- Database migration tools such as Flyway or Liquibase
- API documentation with OpenAPI/Swagger
- Containerisation with Docker; exposure to Kubernetes or OpenShift
- Application security basics: OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, and OWASP Top 10 awareness
- Observability: structured logging, metrics and tracing (e.g. ELK, Grafana, OpenTelemetry)
- Code quality tools such as SonarQube
- Experience in banking or other regulated environments
