Senior Python Engineer, Generative AI & Risk Technology
Citi's Markets Technology group is redefining how financial risk is managed, and we're looking for a Senior Python Engineer to sit at the center of that transformation. In this role, you will build and scale intelligent backend platforms that apply Generative AI to analyze vast volumes of unstructured financial data - extracting trading intelligence, validating market activity, and strengthening the controls that underpin Citi's global markets business. This is a high-impact engineering role where roughly 80% of your time is hands-on coding, and your work will directly shape the next generation of risk technology at one of the world's leading financial institutions.
Responsibilities
- Build and implement sophisticated risk algorithms on Citi's strategic platforms by integrating Generative AI foundational models to validate market behavior and extract actionable intelligence from large volumes of chat & voice data.
- Apply advanced prompt engineering, token usage optimization, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques to develop efficient, production-grade solutions using Citi's proprietary data at scale.
- Design, develop, and deliver end-to-end backend systems - from architectural design and system analysis through to deployment on Kubernetes-based infrastructure.
- Continuously evaluate and implement emerging Generative AI techniques and technologies to improve platform capability and development efficiency.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features across a platform with hundreds of underlying controls.
- Produce high-quality, production-ready software that is unit-tested, code-reviewed, and integrated continuously into live systems.
- Create and maintain clear, comprehensive technical documentation to support system reliability and team knowledge sharing.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- 4+ years of hands-on experience applying Generative AI foundational models in production environments, with demonstrated expertise in prompt engineering and token usage optimization.
- Deep professional experience in Python for backend development, with the ability to design and build scalable, high-performance systems.
- Practical knowledge of Kubernetes for deploying and operating scalable backend platforms and engineering high-performance APIs.
- Solid command of software engineering fundamentals, including system design, data structures, and algorithms.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and deliver across multiple workstreams without close direction.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.

- Experience working in financial services or banking, with familiarity with trading workflows, market data, or financial risk concepts.
- Exposure to processing and deriving insights from large volumes of unstructured or conversational data.
- Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to align technical and non-technical stakeholders around shared goals.
- Experience working across cross-functional teams and contributing to collaborative platform delivery.
