The City of New York is the municipal government of the largest city in the United States, formed in its present five-borough shape by the consolidation of 1898. It employs several hundred thousand people across more than eighty agencies covering education, policing, fire and emergency services, health and hospitals, sanitation, transport, housing, parks, social services and technology, making it one of the largest single employers in the country. Its Office of Technology and Innovation runs the digital services, data platforms and cybersecurity for those agencies, and the city recruits continuously across engineering, analysis, clinical, administrative and field roles.

Job Description

The Family Court Division’s Juvenile Justice practice is accepting applications from admitted attorneys for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel (ACC) in the Juvenile Justice practice.

The Juvenile Justice practice handles cases involving youth under the age of 18 who are charged with committing acts, which if committed by an adult, would be a crime. Attorneys handle a vertical caseload that includes cases in all stages from referral through disposition. They interact with members of the public, city agencies, the court, and counsel. The ideal candidate is a strong, compassionate litigator who is committed to obtaining fair and just results. They excel at investigation, negotiation, hearings, and trial. They use their skills to obtain rehabilitative outcomes that are mandated by law and which address the needs and best interest of the youth and the need for the protection of the community.

The Juvenile Justice practice is committed to the professional development of staff. The Division’s training unit provides extensive courses in all areas of practice. Junior attorneys are provided the opportunity to second seat dedicated attorneys with advanced experience. The practice contains both a Major Case unit, the members of which handle the most serious charges (including homicide, attempted homicide, and other violent cases) and a Special Victims unit, the members of which handle cases involving the most vulnerable victims of sexual offenses and teen dating violence, to which attorneys may apply and through which they gain enhanced training and opportunities to handle the Division’s most serious, complicated, and impactful cases. Attorneys also become skilled in the determination of appropriate services for system involved youth as they advocate for rehabilitative outcomes that address complex issues facing youth and families in NYC. Attorneys work alongside members of law enforcement, mental health, and medical professionals as well as community-based program leaders. As public servants, attorneys are also involved in community outreach and engagement through participation with the members of the communities we serve. They attend events and meetings and make meaningful connection with school, law enforcement, and other communities in order to address the issues that drive juvenile justice involvement. Attorneys appear in NYC Family, Criminal, and Supreme Courts and may also appear alongside Appeals Attorneys on Division issues in the Appellate Courts. Attorneys participate in a limited rotation of night and weekend court assignments and may be required to attend community events in the evening and weekend hours. Work time may be shifted to accommodate these requirements.

The role is particularly suited for attorneys seeking meaningful public service, particularly with regard to the success and well-being of the youth families and communities of NYC.
