You’ll work alongside our DBA and Data Engineers, in close partnership with our DevOps team, who own our cloud infrastructure, to keep production databases fast, secure, and reliable.\nOur databases are self-hosted on AWS EC2: Microsoft SQL Server with a failover replica, and PostgreSQL in a primary/replica configuration, alongside Snowflake as our data warehouse. We’re looking for someone with deep expertise in SQL Server or PostgreSQL and strong hands-on experience with the other.\nYou won’t just keep the lights on. You’ll help shape how we build, deploy, and operate our data platform, including bringing our database tooling under infrastructure-as-code.\nWhat You'll Be Doing\nKeep Our Databases Available & Recoverable\nKeep production databases stable and resilient, with reliable failover, replication, and disaster-recovery plans.\nOwn backup and recovery strategy and automate regular testing of restores and failover.\nRefresh non-production environments from production data safely and repeatably.\nDrive Performance & Scalability\nMonitor, troubleshoot, and tune database performance, from queries and indexes to server and instance configuration.\nPartner with engineers on schema design, query optimization, and efficient data processing.\nPlan for capacity and growth before they become problems.\nOperate & Monitor Production\nBuild and maintain monitoring, dashboards and alerting that surface issues early.\nParticipate in an on-call rotation, responding to and resolving database incidents, then following up with fixes that prevent repeats.\nInstall, configure, patch, and upgrade self-hosted database servers on EC2, using scripted, repeatable processes.\nProtect Sensitive Financial Data\nManage access using least-privilege principles, and audit roles and permissions regularly.\nImplement encryption, secure connections, and auditing to protect sensitive financial and personal data.\nImprove How We Ship Database Changes\nReview and deploy database changes and maintain and enforce best practices for database deployments.\nImprove our GitLab CI/CD pipelines for database changes, making releases safer, faster, more automated, and SOC 2 compliant.\nWrite and review production data fixes with care.\nAutomate routine tasks with Python and scripting and keep runbooks and documentation current.\nSupport Engineering & Data Teams\nProvision new databases as new services come online.\nSupport data engineering pipelines, including AWS DMS replication and orchestration, that move operational data into Snowflake.\nHelp developers with database access, troubleshooting, and best practices.\nUse AI to Work Better & Faster\nUse modern AI tools and agents to accelerate performance analysis, troubleshooting, scripting, and documentation.\nIdentify opportunities where AI can improve database operations and reliability.\nShare effective AI workflows and techniques with the team.\nImprove How We Ship Database Changes\nBring our AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) resources, including replication instances, endpoints, and tasks, under infrastructure-as-code with Terraform.\nCollaborate with DevOps on the EC2 instances, storage, and networking for our databases.\nBuild repeatable, automated processes for database provisioning, patching, and failover.\nWhat We're Looking For\nRequired Qualifications\n3+ years of administering SQL Server or PostgreSQL in production, with strong hands-on skills in the other.\nHigh availability, disaster recovery, and backup/restore, including failover replicas, streaming replication, and point-in-time recovery.\nRunning self-hosted databases on AWS EC2 and Linux, in partnership with DevOps.\nPerformance tuning and query optimization, plus strong T-SQL and SQL, including stored procedures and functions.\nInstance configuration, security, roles, and routine maintenance across both engines.\nAutomation with Python and working knowledge of PowerShell and Bash, using Git-based workflows with code review and staged deployments.\nStrong troubleshooting skills and a calm approach to production incidents.\nStrong written communication for runbooks, documentation, and tickets.\nUsing AI-assisted tools for database analysis and operations.\nWhat Will Make You Stand Out\nDesigning database architecture that scales with the business, such as partitioning, read scaling, and capacity planning.\nWindows Server administration in support of SQL Server and its
