This position is responsible for embedding tissue samples, loading and unloading surgical specimens on tissue processors, assisting with processor and stainer chemical changes, filing blocks and slides, and maintaining clean and organized assigned work areas.\nThe Lab Assistant - Embedder works closely with the Histology department and supports laboratory workflow through attention to detail, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and teamwork. This position is also responsible for completing daily quality control (QC) documentation, maintaining equipment and supplies, and assisting with other Histology department functions as assigned.\nThis position may support several laboratory functions, including:\nEmbedding tissue samples\n\nLoading and unloading surgical specimens on tissue processors\n\nAssisting with processor and stainer chemical changes\n\nFiling blocks and slides as needed\n\nCompleting daily QC documentation\n\nMaintaining equipment and supplies in clean condition\n\nTransferring waste from stainers and tissue processors to designated 90-day accumulation containers (55-gallon drums)\n\nAssisting the Histology department with assigned tasks\n\nTroubleshooting and problem-solving\n\nMaintaining communication with the Histology Lab Supervisor or Manager\n\nPerforming other duties as assigned\n\nEmployees are responsible for following all company policies and procedures, including adherence to applicable regulatory standards such as CAP, CLIA, and OSHA, as well as established laboratory safety requirements.\nESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:\nEssential functions of the job include, but are not limited to:\nEmbeds tissue samples according to established laboratory procedures.\n\nLoads and unloads tissue samples on processors.\n\nFiles blocks and slides as needed.\n\nAssists the Histology department with assigned duties.\n\nPerforms daily QC documentation.\n\nMaintains equipment and supplies in clean condition.\n\nTransfers waste from stainers and tissue processors to designated 90-day accumulation containers (55-gallon drums).\n\nAssists with troubleshooting and problem-solving.\n\nMaintains communication with the Histology Lab Supervisor or Manager.\n\nPerforms other duties as assigned.\n\nPHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT:\nMust be able to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds routinely to move objects.\n\nMay be exposed to blood products, knife cuts, hazardous waste, and chemical fumes.\n\nAppropriate precautionary measures must be followed at all times.\n\nEye protection, masks, lab coats, and/or gloves may be required depending on the task.\n\nHazardous waste training is required.\n\nMust be able to follow established laboratory procedures and safety requirements.\n\nEQUIPMENT USED:\nMicrowave and conventional tissue processors\n\nEmbedding center\n\nH&E stainers\n\nCoverslipper\n\nTypical laboratory equipment\n\nComputer\n\nSUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:\nNone.\nMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:\nHigh School Diploma or GED required.\n\nPrior laboratory, healthcare, specimen processing, or related work experience preferred.\n\nAbility to accurately enter and verify information in laboratory systems.\n\nAbility to follow written procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.\n\nStrong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced laboratory environment.\n\nWORK ENVIRONMENT:\nThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the duties of this job.
