This position is responsible for assisting with slide preparation, instrument maintenance, digital imaging, and other laboratory tasks while maintaining clean and organized assigned work areas.\nThe Lab Assistant - Histology works closely with the Histology department and supports laboratory workflow through attention to detail, multitasking, and teamwork. Depending on the assigned level, responsibilities may include assisting with employee training, troubleshooting, updating procedures, and providing department oversight in the absence of the Histology Lab Manager.\nThis position may support several laboratory functions, including:\nLoading and unloading slides\n\nRunning slides through a series of chemicals in preparation for coverslipping\n\nFlattening and organizing slides in preparation for technician quality control (QC)\n\nPrinting run reports for completed cases\n\nScanning predictive marker cases using digital imaging systems\n\nPerforming instrument maintenance, including topping off chemicals, discarding waste, and running cleaning cycles\n\nTaking instruments offline and returning them to service\n\nAssisting with new employee orientation and training, as applicable\n\nAssisting with updating and maintaining Accessioning procedures, as applicable\n\nTroubleshooting and problem-solving\n\nMaintaining communication with the Histology Lab Manager\n\nCleaning and maintaining assigned laboratory areas\n\nPerforming other duties as assigned\n\nEmployees are responsible for following all company policies and procedures, including adherence to applicable regulatory standards such as CAP, CLIA, and OSHA, as well as established laboratory safety requirements.\nESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:\nEssential functions of the job include, but are not limited to:\nLoads and unloads slides according to established laboratory procedures.\n\nRuns slides through a series of chemicals in preparation for coverslipping.\n\nFlattens and organizes slides in preparation for technician QC.\n\nPrints run reports for completed cases.\n\nScans predictive marker cases utilizing digital imaging systems.\n\nPerforms instrument maintenance, including topping off chemicals, discarding waste, and running cleaning cycles.\n\nTakes instruments offline and returns them to service as needed.\n\nCleans and maintains assigned laboratory areas.\n\nPerforms other duties as assigned.\n\nPHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT:\nMust be able to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds routinely to move objects.\n\nMust be able to perform laboratory tasks requiring attention to detail and the ability to multitask.\n\nMust be able to follow established procedures when handling laboratory materials, chemicals, and equipment.\n\nMay be exposed to blood products, knife cuts, hazardous waste, and chemical fumes.\n\nAppropriate precautionary measures must be followed at all times.\n\nEye protection, masks, lab coats, and/or gloves may be required depending on the task.\n\nHazardous waste training is required.\n\nMust be able to work effectively with the Histology team and maintain communication with laboratory leadership.\n\nEQUIPMENT USED:\nIHC and special stainers\n\nDigital imaging systems\n\nCoverslippers\n\nDrying ovens\n\nTypical laboratory equipment\n\nComputer and printer\n\nMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:\nHigh School Diploma or GED required.\n\nAbility to follow established laboratory procedures and safety requirements.\n\nStrong attention to detail and ability to multitask.\n\nAbility to work effectively as part of a team.\n\nAbility to perform assigned duties while maintaining laboratory quality and safety standards.\n\nWORK ENVIRONMENT:\nThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the duties of this job.
