This role is open to candidates across North America (US and Canada, excluding Quebec). If you are located near one of our hubs (Burnaby, Calgary, or Toronto), you will be expected to work in the office a minimum of twice per week on our designated Anchor Days.\nAbout the role\nYou will own the design of playbook automations within Clio Work, the capability that lets legal professionals automate their legal playbooks so a matter can run end-to-end with its documents drafted along the way. It is the core of what makes Clio Work valuable to a firm.\nAs a Staff Product Designer, you will partner with the drafting team’s design lead to cover a comprehensive and highly complex surface area, setting direction where it is still forming and driving work from vision through execution. This is a hands-on individual contributor role. You will own outcomes rather than people, and much of the work is discovered by building: prototyping alongside engineering as the underlying AI capability evolves, rather than designing far in advance of it.\nDrafting sits inside Clio Work, our AI-native workspace for the practice of law, where legal professionals and AI collaborate on substantive legal work. Legal professionals today assemble documents by hand from templates and precedent, repeating the same judgment calls matter after matter. Design plays a central role in solving this, shaping how firms encode their own expertise once and then let it run.\nDesign is central to Clio’s R&D, working alongside Product and Engineering to revolutionize legal tech. If you are passionate about user-centered design, mission-driven companies, and transforming how lawyers and their staff deliver exceptional client services, join us!\nWhat you’ll do\nOwn a product area: Lead design for playbook automations end-to-end, from vision and ideation through prototyping, testing, and polished production work.\nDesign for AI: Ship AI-powered workflows where the right experience depends on how the model behaves, exercising judgment about trust, explainability, and the appropriate level of automation and control.\nPrototype with engineering: Partner closely and continuously with Engineering, prototyping quickly to learn what is possible rather than specifying ahead of the technology.\nSet direction: Bring strong product thinking to an area that needs clearer direction, framing opportunities and shaping strategy alongside Product and Engineering.\nWork across boundaries: Design experiences that span product boundaries, connecting drafting coherently to the rest of Clio Work and the wider Clio platform.\nRaise the quality bar: Deliver polished, accessible, cohesive experiences across a high-complexity surface area.\nBuild the narrative: Pitch ideas and visions upward, build buy-in through clear storytelling and decision framing, and hold a well-reasoned position amid ambiguity.\nContribute to the design system: Evolve Clio’s design system, identifying gaps and improving consistency beyond your immediate scope.\nCreate leverage for the team: Raise the bar through constructive critique and by partnering with more junior designers to execute.\nWhat you bring\n12+ years of Product Design experience. B2B SaaS experience is preferred, but not required.\nDirect experience shipping AI-powered features or workflows, with a strong understanding of user-centered applications of machine learning and generative AI.\nExperience designing complex workflows or features for enterprise-type applications, on desktop and web rather than consumer or mobile.\nDemonstrated ownership of an entire product, not only features within one, including the ambiguity and strategic framing that comes with it.\nExperience with work that crosses product boundaries and spans multiple products or customer segments.\nStrong product thinking, with the ability to set direction where product direction is still forming.\nExtensive partnership with Engineering, including the ability to prototype quickly and iterate alongside them.\nExperience working in-house at a product company rather than in a consultancy or agency model, with deep understanding of a specific user group.\nStrong narrative and presentation skills, with a track record of pitching ideas and visions upward and winning buy-in.\nThe ability to navigate ambiguity and hold a position amid divergent or incomplete direction.\nStrong craft across interaction design, information architecture, usability, and visual design, with consistently high-quality execution.\nExperience with accessibility standards (WCAG).\nNice to have\nExperience in the legal space, at a firm or at a legal technology company.\nExperience applying AI to document drafting in another document-heavy sector such as insurance or accounting.\nThis role is a backfill for an existing position.\nWhat you will find here:\nCompensation is one of the main components of Clio’s Total Rewards Program.
