This is a hands-on technical leadership role, combining expertise in data engineering and architecture with responsibility for building team capability, establishing development standards and delivering high-quality data solutions.\nThis is a hybrid position based at our Birmingham office.\nJoin us in transforming data into meaningful insight\nWorking with Microsoft Fabric, you'll play a key role in designing, building and maintaining scalable data solutions that support reporting, analytics and informed decision-making across the organisation.\nYou'll work with modern technologies including Microsoft Fabric, Spark, Azure DevOps, SQL, Python/PySparkand AI-enabled development tools, helping to deliver trusted data products that improve operational performance, support safeguarding outcomes and drive strategic decision-making.\nAlongside your technical responsibilities, you'll provide day-to-day leadership of the BI team, supporting their professional development, sharing technical expertise and ensuring consistent, high-quality engineering practices.\nWhat you'll be doing\nLead the design, development and ongoing enhancement of our enterprise data platform using Microsoft Fabric.\nDesign and develop reliable data ingestion, transformation and orchestration processes using both code-first and low-code approaches.\nDevelop and optimise Spark-based data solutions using Python/PySparkand notebooks.\nDesign scalable data models and data warehouses that support business intelligence, reporting and analytics.\nImplement effective data quality, monitoring, security and governance processes.\nEstablish and maintain engineering standards, reusable development patterns, source control and CI/CD practices using Azure DevOps.\nTake technical ownership of the data platform, troubleshooting complex issues and driving improvements in performance, reliability and cost-effectiveness.\nManage and develop the BI team, including setting objectives, providing regular feedback, managing performance and supporting individual development.\nProvide hands-on technical leadership, coaching and mentoring, sharing knowledge and building the team's technical capabilities and confidence.\nWork with stakeholders to understand requirements, prioritise activities and ensure the delivery of high-quality data solutions.\nSupport Power BI developers and analysts by providing trusted, well-modelled data for reporting and analytics.\nChampion the responsible use of AI-enabled development tools and automation to improve engineering efficiency, quality and innovation.\nAbout you\nYou'll be an experienced, hands-on data professional who combines strong technical expertise with the ability to lead, support and develop a team. You'll enjoy solving complex technical challenges while helping colleagues grow their skills and deliver high-quality solutions.\nYou'll bring:\nStrong advanced SQL skills and hands-on experience with Python/PySpark.\nExperience working with Microsoft Fabric and/or Azure Databricks.\nExpertise in Spark-based data engineering and cloud data platforms.\nStrong knowledge of ELT/ETL processes, orchestration, dimensional data modelling and Lakehouse architectures.\nExperience using Azure DevOps, Git repositories, code reviews and CI/CD practices.\nUnderstanding of data governance, security, GDPR and data quality best practices.\nExperience supporting analytics and reporting environments, ideally including Power BI.\nPrevious experience managing and developing a technical team, including setting objectives, coaching, mentoring and performance management.\nThe ability to provide hands-on technical leadership, establish development standards and promote knowledge sharing across a team.\nExcellent problem-solving, communication and stakeholder management skills.\nThe ability to balance code-first and low-code development approaches to deliver effective, maintainable and cost-efficient solutions.\nDesirable experience\nMicrosoft Fabric, Azure or Databricks certifications.\nExperience with Fabric Data Factory pipelines, Dataflows Gen2 and Direct Lake.\nKnowledge of AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot or Claude.\nExperience with Fabric CLI, Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations or development automation.\nExperience within a regulated environment such as children's services, healthcare, education or social care.\nUnderstanding of safeguarding and compliance requirements.\nSkills\nFostering -
