Position Overview
Do you have a passion for the environment and sustainability? Are you excited about contributing to a community-focused recycling site? We’re hiring a part-time Environmental Technician to support composting operations at our innovative Compost Outpost located in Frederick, Maryland. You’ll work closely with our team to turn food scraps from our customers into top-quality, nutrient-rich compost while developing your technical, mechanical, and environmental skills. This is a great opportunity to build your experience in sustainability while earning competitive pay. This is a part-time position working 25 hours per week, generally 12-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Starting pay is $19-$20 per hour.

Ability to lift up to 55 pounds up to 50 times per day
Access to reliable transportation; public transportation and rideshare services are not viable options given the site’s location
Availability to work 12-5 p.m., Monday through Friday
U.S. employment authorization
Other Helpful Background
Experience in composting, agriculture, commercial production, or a related field
Knowledge of composting principles, science, methods, and processes
Knowledge of or experience with farm equipment, machinery operation, and preventive maintenance
Maryland Compost Facility Operator certification or interest in obtaining it
Experience working outdoors in all weather conditions
Key Responsibilities
Support the composting process by monitoring key conditions, including temperature and moisture, and making routine adjustments as directed and in accordance with established procedures.
Learn to operate composting machinery and perform basic preventive maintenance.
Help maintain a clean, organized site and complete operational records in accordance with established procedures and State regulatory requirements.
Perform daily decontamination of food scrap feedstocks received from our collection routes.
Follow safety procedures and promptly report hazards or equipment concerns.
Assist with site improvement projects and other composting tasks as assigned.
Communicate site conditions, operational updates, and concerns to supervisors.
