Audience Development Manager, Vanity Fair

Overview/Purpose

Vanity Fair is looking for a creative and thoughtful media talent to join our audience development, production, and operations team.

The ideal candidate will understand how to reach readers and audiences across channels, and be capable of executing strategy by working across departments. The audience development manager will collaborate closely with Vanity Fair’s Director of Audience and Digital Operations and the audience development team to implement strategies for newsletters and audience growth, on both daily and broader levels. This person will also act as a liaison between the VF audience development team and out-of-brand departments within Condé Nast, including the central newsletters, product, advertising operations, analytics, global partnerships, and consumer marketing teams.

The audience development manager will help shape and champion Vanity Fair’s voice and perspective. The ideal candidate will understand how to execute business, operational, and editorial tasks in ways that advance VF’s creative strategy.

The person in this role will act as a central hub in the VF newsroom, so the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with multiple stakeholders is essential. The successful candidate will be a fast learner and problem solver, with demonstrated experience working to deliver exceptional editorial projects within a tight timeline. While not essential, past experience liaising with product development teams and some familiarity with digital advertising is a plus.

This role is based in New York City and reports to the Director of Audience and Digital Operations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with editors, producers, and the audience development team to grow subscriptions, page views, and engagement across core VF subject areas, including Hollywood, arts & culture, technology, politics, style, and royals

  • Devise and execute audience growth strategies for VF newsletters in close collaboration with the Director of Audience and Digital Operations and the Condé Nast newsletters team

  • Master the homepage and become an expert at translating the sophistication and distinction of Vanity Fair to web and newsletter environments

  • Work with consumer marketing and advertising operations teams to fulfill sold newsletter campaigns

  • Collaborate with associate producers to build and publish newsletters, index pages, and article pages in ways that grow the VF audience

  • Work closely with Condé Nast product development partners to help commission site and app improvements and bring them to fruition

  • Build relationships with editors and writers and help translate audience strategy into tangible steps in the editorial process

  • Pitch Vanity Fair reporting to external distribution channels, including Apple News

  • Build syndicated stories from VF Italy, France, and Spain to help extend the brand’s global reach

  • Understand on a granular level every performance metric used to evaluate Vanity Fair’s growth strategy, and how to manage those levers across site, search, and newsletters

  • Translate analytics and data insights into methods to proactively optimize content for audience growth

  • Collaborate with the edit, art, and social departments on promoting longform features, which are core to VF’s editorial strategy across platforms

  • Seek out global audience growth opportunities, from partnerships to platforms, working with the Director to implement new strategies in real time

  • Collaborate with the editorial and social teams for coverage of live events, including the VF Oscar Party, awards shows, elections, and other news moments, whether planned or breaking. On occasion, this work may extend into the evening or be needed on the weekends.

  • Develop relationships with audience development managers across other Condé Nast brands to share strategies and best practices

  • Work with the team to support sponsorships and events

  • Additional duties as needed or requested by management

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in publishing; editorial production or audience development familiarity preferred

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Professional experience creating, optimizing, and adapting content for platforms including websites, newsletters, video, and social media platforms

  • Professional experience with publishing and analytics tools, including content management systems such as Wordpress, Letterhead, Apple News Publisher, Parse.ly, and Google Analytics

  • A sense of humor and keenness to adapt to a changing media landscape and find audiences in new ways

  • An understanding of Vanity Fair’s voice and sensibility

This is a guild position.
