Unlike a conference or summit, Constellation operates continuously, in the form of a physical workspace as well as conference-style talks, workshops, and training bootcamps. Continuous operation allows for relationships and conversations to develop over time, meaningfully fostering trust, collaboration, and shared insight. It also makes Constellation a natural field-building hub by rapidly inspiring, orienting, and connecting people who are newer to the field.\nBased in Berkeley, CA, our shared workspace hosts over 300 people per week across dozens of AI safety organizations in nonprofits, academia, industry, and government. Hundreds of other researchers spend time at Constellation for shorter visits each year. We believe this is the strongest and highest-output network of AI safety researchers in the world; dozens of participants in past Constellation programs have gone on to safety-focused roles at companies such as METR, Redwood Research, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and the US and UK Safety Institutes.\nAbout the role\nThe Manager, Operations leads Constellation's Operations Coordinator (OC) team, which provides day-to-day support to our researchers and programs. In this role, you’ll be responsible for the people, the development path, and the capacity of the team that keeps our research center running.\nThis is a people management role, and a people development role where your primary responsibility is to manage and develop the careers of a team of 5-10 junior Operations Coordinators to be both excellent in their current roles while preparing for long careers in AI safety.\nThe OC role is an entry-level operations role. They handle arrivals and tours, requests, onboarding and offboarding, and event support for dozens of organizations and hundreds of researchers. Coordinators learn the core work, take on projects, and move into roles across the AI safety ecosystem.\nThe Manager, Operations is accountable for both sides of that: ensuring the team delivers excellent service every day, and that every coordinator develops their skills to prepare them for taking on more responsibilities.\nYou will be responsible for prioritizing larger requests for OC time from Constellation teams and partner orgs. Since OC time is finite, you’ll weigh those tradeoffs and make clear, well-communicated decisions. As our organization grows, you’ll also work closely with other managers to develop and improve processes for efficiently handing off work between teams.\nThis is a full-time, in-person role. You must be able to work on-site in Berkeley from 9am to 5pm on weekdays. There is occasional evening work for events and urgent issues.\nKey responsibilities\nPeople management and development\nPeople manage a team of 5-10 Operations Coordinators. Set goals, give regular feedback, and own performance management for up to ten OCs and Senior OCs.\nGuide each OC through their professional development path: core skills, mentorship, projects, and transition. Actively source small operations projects from other Constellation teams and partner orgs in our building to help them test their fit and land a strong next step.\nCoach and advise Senior OCs, who split their time between doing their own projects and training/mentoring new OCs.\nManaging the OC hiring process and own hiring decisions for new cohorts of OCs. Teach current OCs how to do screening and interviewing to build their skills and share the workload.\nCapacity planning and intake\nAct as the single intake point for requests on OC time. Weigh them against core coverage, training load, and organizational priorities, and communicate decisions (including \"not now\") clearly and kindly.\nManage the OC schedule. The OC role is non-exempt and requires overtime for any hours worked beyond 40 per week. The Operations Program Manager is responsible for ensuring OCs manage their time effectively and for approving OT when necessary.\nForecast OC capacity across cohort transitions, event-heavy periods, and the project portfolio. Keep the coverage rotation sustainable.\nBalance core operations against projects with other Constellation teams and partner orgs.\nProgram ownership\nWorking closely with the Senior OCs, own the OC training plan: keep it current, improve it with each cohort's feedback, and make sure trainers are set up to succeed.\nSet and uphold quality standards for the core functions: arrivals and tours, requests, onboarding, offboarding, etc. Work with the Senior OCs on quality assurance and setting standard operating procedures.\nHelp OCs scope and complete projects that build their skills and benefit the organization.\nCross-functional partnership\nPartner with Site Operations, Convening, People Ops, and BizOps team leads to keep OC work aligned with the organization’s priorities.\nContribute to long-term org design for the OC program as it evolves.\nSkills & experience\nExperience and confidence managing and developing a team of 5-10 early-career staff, ideally in operations or a service-oriented team\nExperience designing or running onboarding and training programs\nSkill at prioritizing among competing requests from many stakeholders, and at saying no with grace\nDirect, kind, specific feedback, and comfort delivering difficult news\nHiring experience: screening, interviewing, and making decisions\nEnough hands-on operations knowledge (office, events, customer support) to set standards and QA the work credibly\nSystems thinking: you notice what breaks at scale and fix the process\nClear, concise written communication\nComfort with:Asana, Slack Google Workspace, and Claude\nAmbiguity and change during an interim structure\nThinking on your feet in a fast-paced environment\n\nYou might be a good fit if you\nGet energy from helping early-career people grow, and are proud when they move on to great roles\nLike fitting finite capacity to a large volume of demand\nHave a service mindset and care about the experience of researchers and visitors\nTake ownership and enjoy building a program, not just running one\nAre excited to support the AI safety ecosystem and learn more about it\nCare about making transformative AI go well\nCompensation & Benefits\nThe base pay range for this role is $148,000 - $192,000 per year.\nOur benefits are hard to beat! They include:\nHealthy lunches and dinners catered by our amazing kitchen team\nUnlimited snacks & drinks\nGenerous vacation policy\n401(k) with employer match\nEmployer-paid commuter benefits\nHigh-quality health, dental, and vision insurance\nFriendly and supportive team\nRegular interaction with AI safety researchers and thought leaders","description_format":"text","description_chars":6790,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Generous vacation","Professional development","Vision insurance"],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["AI Safety & Alignment","Research Institutes"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-11-03T15:44:45Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":86,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.86,"p_room":1,"age_days":2,"expected_fill_days":77,"reasons":["conf:2","win:early","comp:junior"],"computed_at":"2026-11-06T05:58:05Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/constellation-operations-program-manager","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/constellation-operations-program-manager.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-11-06T21:49:54Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":2801,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-11-07T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":178478},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=178478"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fconstellation-operations-program-manager"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fconstellation-operations-program-manager"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fconstellation-operations-program-manager"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/constellation-operations-program-manager\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fconstellation-operations-program-manager"}],"agent":{"mcp":"https://alion.io/mcp/jobs","mcp_open":"https://alion.io/mcp/open","next":[{"tool":"get_job","arguments":{"id":3688468}},{"tool":"search_jobs","arguments":{"company":"constellation.org","detail":"compact"}},{"tool":"match_people","arguments":{"job_id":3688468},"note":"people open to offers who fit this vacancy"}],"note":"The same data through MCP tools: https://alion.io/mcp/open needs no sign-in (compact searches, postings, people); https://alion.io/mcp with an Alion account has everything.
