Maybell builds beautiful, performant dilution refrigerators obsessively designed to support more qubits in a smaller footprint.

About Us

Maybell Quantum is redefining the future of computing. As a venture-backed quantum hardware innovator experiencing rapid growth, we are building technology that will transform industries for decades to come. Quantum computers will be as transformative to the next 30 years as the internet was to the last 30-and our team is creating the hardware foundation that will make this revolution possible.

Position Overview

Maybell Quantum is seeking a Vice President of Finance to lead the company’s finance organization through its next stage of growth. As a member of the executive leadership team, you will own Maybell’s financial strategy, planning, operational finance, capital strategy, and financial reporting.

This role requires more than traditional financial oversight. You will help determine where and how Maybell deploys capital, build the financial infrastructure required to scale a complex hardware manufacturing business, and provide the analysis and judgment needed to guide major company decisions.

The Controller will report to the Vice President of Finance and will oversee accounting operations, close, compliance, and financial controls. The Vice President of Finance will ensure those capabilities are integrated with forward-looking planning, manufacturing economics, executive decision-making, and long-term company strategy.

The ideal candidate has helped scale a venture-backed startup or high-growth manufacturing organization and understands the financial realities of hardware development, production ramps, long sales cycles, and capital-intensive growth.

Key Responsibilities

Executive and Financial Leadership

  • Serve as the executive owner of Maybell’s finance function and a strategic advisor to the CEO, President, executive team, and Board of Directors.
  • Translate the company’s growth objectives into a comprehensive financial strategy, operating plan, and capital allocation framework.
  • Bring financial discipline and commercial judgment to decisions involving product development, manufacturing capacity, hiring, pricing, customer contracts, and geographic expansion.
  • Identify financial and operational risks early and recommend clear, practical courses of action.
  • Build and lead a finance organization capable of supporting Maybell as it scales.
  • Manage and develop the Controller, establishing clear ownership across strategic finance, accounting, reporting, compliance, and financial operations.

Financial Planning and Analysis

  • Own the annual operating plan, long-range plan, rolling forecasts, scenario analyses, and company-wide budgeting process.
  • Develop financial models that connect revenue, backlog, production capacity, headcount, capital expenditures, R&D milestones, and cash requirements.
  • Establish the company’s core metrics framework across revenue, gross margin, burn, runway, working capital, operational efficiency, and capital deployment.
  • Define and monitor leading indicators of business performance, including pipeline coverage, contract velocity, backlog conversion, product-line margins, manufacturing readiness, and technology-development milestones.
  • Partner with functional leaders to establish budgets, evaluate performance against plan, identify root causes of variances, and drive corrective action.
  • Create decision-ready analysis that provides leadership with clear recommendations-not simply financial outputs.

Manufacturing and Operational Finance

  • Build the financial systems and operating discipline required to support a growing hardware manufacturing organization.
  • Develop visibility into product and program economics, including bill-of-materials costs, labor, overhead, manufacturing yield, scrap, inventory, capacity utilization, and cost per system.
  • Partner closely with Operations, Supply Chain, Engineering, and Product to improve gross margins and inform sourcing, pricing, make-versus-buy, and production decisions.
  • Establish scalable approaches to standard costing, inventory valuation, capital expenditure planning, working capital management, and margin analysis.
  • Evaluate the financial implications of production ramps, facility investments, supplier commitments, and manufacturing constraints.
  • Ensure forecasts reflect the realities of long development cycles, technical uncertainty, and changing production schedules without creating false precision.

Accounting, Controls, and Global Reporting

  • Lead the Controller and oversee the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of the company’s financial reporting.
  • Ensure accounting results are translated into clear insights regarding burn, runway, budget performance, cash requirements, and operating trends.
  • Oversee the development of appropriate financial controls, policies, systems, and reporting processes as the company scales.
  • Partner with the Controller and external advisors on audits, tax matters, regulatory requirements, revenue recognition, and international financial operations.
  • Ensure consistent financial reporting and controls across Maybell’s domestic and international entities.
  • Assess and implement scalable finance systems, including ERP and reporting infrastructure, to support increasing manufacturing and organizational complexity.

Capital Strategy, Board, and Investor Relations

  • Lead financial preparation for board meetings, investor updates, fundraising activities, and other strategic transactions.
  • Develop a clear financial narrative that connects technical progress, manufacturing performance, commercial traction, and capital requirements.
  • Establish consistency between internal operating metrics and the information communicated to the Board and investors.
  • Partner with executive leadership on equity and debt financing strategy, fundraising preparation, due diligence, and investor engagement.
  • Model and track equity capital, government grants, SBIR/STTR awards, strategic contracts, and other non-dilutive funding sources.
  • Maintain a consolidated view of available capital, funding restrictions, future requirements, and capital deployment.
  • Evaluate strategic opportunities, partnerships, investments, and potential transactions from both financial and operational perspectives.

Government and Commercial Contracts

  • Provide financial oversight for government and commercial contract structures, including fixed-price, cost-plus, milestone-based, and grant-funded programs.
  • Partner with business and technical leaders to evaluate contract economics, pricing, delivery risks, cash flow, and resource requirements.
  • Ensure the company develops appropriate systems for contract reporting, cost tracking, compliance, and revenue recognition.
  • Assess customer- and program-level profitability to inform future commercial strategy and contract negotiations.

Qualifications

  • 12+ years of progressive finance experience, including significant leadership responsibility within a startup, manufacturing, hardware, deep-tech, aerospace, defense, or similarly complex operating environment.
  • Previous experience leading a finance function or serving in a senior finance leadership role with responsibility for both strategic and operational finance.
  • Demonstrated success helping a venture-backed or high-growth organization move from early-stage operations toward repeatable, scalable execution.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing finance, including inventory, cost accounting, bills of materials, production yields, working capital, capital expenditures, and gross-margin improvement.
  • Experience managing, partnering with, or overseeing a Controller and accounting organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to build financial planning, reporting, and decision-support capabilities from the ground up.
  • Experience modeling businesses with long development cycles, hardware production ramps, technical uncertainty, and complex revenue-recognition considerations.
  • Experience supporting fundraising, investor relations, board reporting, and capital planning.
  • Ability to translate technical and operational milestones into credible financial forecasts and capital requirements.
  • Strong executive presence and the ability to challenge assumptions, influence decisions, and communicate clearly across technical and nontechnical teams.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • A hands-on leadership style and willingness to operate at both the strategic and detailed levels in a fast-moving startup environment.
  • Experience with government contracts, grants, SBIR/STTR programs, or regulated contracting environments is strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting international entities or global operations is preferred.
  • Experience implementing or scaling ERP, planning, and business-intelligence systems is preferred.
  • MBA, CFA, or CPA is a plus but not required; demonstrated operating judgment and analytical capability matter more than credentials.

  • Competitive Compensation: Base salary of $180,000-$220,000, with additional compensation through performance bonuses and equity options in one of the country’s most promising startups.
