About the Team

The marimo team develops marimo, an open-source reactive computational notebook for Python. Initially incubated with scientists at Stanford, marimo is now used by leading companies, labs, and universities around the world, with millions of monthly downloads and over 20,000 stars on ourGitHub repository. The team also develops open-source extension packages andmolab, a rapidly growing cloud-hosted notebook service. These efforts reinforce each other: improvements to the open-source notebook make molab better, while lessons from operating molab inform development of the open-source projects.

About the Role

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the marimo team across the open-source ecosystem and molab. You will mentor engineers, provide regular feedback, and help develop their careers, while also helping hire and onboard new teammates.

You will be responsible for team execution, release cadence, software quality, and responsiveness to users. Across the open-source projects, you will help the team ship improvements rapidly and safely while keeping the projects maintainable and responsive to the needs of our diverse users. For molab, you will help the team deliver a reliable service and a high-quality product experience. 

You will shape engineering priorities and technical direction, lead team execution, and strengthen cross-functional collaboration as the team grows. A central part of this role is guiding investment across the open-source marimo ecosystem and molab to help the team achieve its primary goal: making marimo an open-source standard across industry, research, and education. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead engineering execution across marimo’s open-source ecosystem and molab, including project staffing, technical planning, dependency management, and release delivery
• Manage and mentor engineers, support their career development, strengthen their technical judgment and ownership, and help hire and onboard new teammates
• Shape architecture and technical direction with engineers, reviewing designs and guiding tradeoffs among maintainability, correctness, extensibility, performance, and development speed
• Evaluate community feature requests with care, balancing user needs, long-term maintainability, and marimo’s product principles
• Lead improvements to engineering productivity and software quality, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, code review, and release processes
• Establish clear ownership and practices for molab’s production reliability, including observability, incident response, capacity planning, and resolution of recurring failures
• Ensure the team has effective practices for API design, testing, releases and hotfixes, issue triage, and review of community contributions across marimo’s open-source projects

Qualifications:

Bullet of technical and measurable requirements of the role 

• 5+ years of software engineering experience
• 2+ years of engineering management experience leading senior engineers and technical leads
• Proficient in Python, with strong fundamentals that are language agnostic
• Experience contributing to open-source projects
• Technical depth to lead design and architecture reviews and evaluate tradeoffs involving APIs, state management, scalability, security, and reliability
• Experience improving engineering practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, and code review
• Experience owning production services end to end, including performance under load, availability targets, on-call rotations, and incident response
• Experience identifying if processes help or hinder a team and establishing clear, documented workflows that support its growth
• Strong communication skills, written and verbal

Preferred Skills:

Bullet of “nice to have” skillsets - this should not be required 

• Experience maintaining and growing a widely used open-source project
• Experience building developer tools, especially for AI, ML, or data
• A passion for working with data and empathy for practitioners and researchers who use computational tools like notebooks.
• Familiarity with observability platforms (Prometheus, Grafana, alerting systems), Kubernetes, and modern CI/CD practices
• Experience using AI to accelerate engineering processes
• Enjoy connecting regularly with users and contributors and translating their feedback into product and engineering improvements

The base salary range for this role is $182,000 to $242,000. The starting salary will be determined based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and market location. We strive for both market alignment and internal equity when determining compensation. In addition to base salary, our total rewards package includes a discretionary bonus, equity awards, and a comprehensive benefits program (all based on eligibility).
