This team operates as the backbone of the cloud business, enabling accurate pricing, discounting, invoicing, and real-time usage visibility for customers.\nThe systems are highly scalable and event-driven, ingesting and processing massive volumes of data-including customer usage events and Kubernetes-driven infrastructure signals. As the platform scales from early-stage adoption to large-scale rollout, it is expected to handle exponentially growing workloads, potentially reaching hundreds of millions to billions of events, while maintaining high performance and reliability.\nA key focus of this team is building financial-grade systems that ensure accuracy, consistency, and correctness in billing, pricing, and revenue computation. These systems must provide real-time insights to customers while guaranteeing precise accounting of usage and charges.\nAs a Staff Backend Engineer, you will act as a technical leader, translating complex business requirements into scalable architecture and distributed systems. You will design and build low-latency, high-throughput backend services that can support multi-tenant cloud environments, ensure reliability under rapid growth, and maintain strict correctness in revenue-critical workflows.\nWhat You Will Do\nDesign and build scalable backend systems for pricing, billing, and usage metering\nDevelop event-driven architectures to process large volumes of real-time usage and infrastructure data\nBuild systems that provide real-time visibility into customer usage and billing metrics\nDesign components for rate cards, pricing plans, discounting, and multi-currency transactions\nWork on distributed systems that support exponential growth in customers and usage events\nCollaborate with product, infrastructure, and platform teams to build cloud-native commerce capabilities\nEnsure high levels of accuracy, reliability, and scalability in revenue-critical systems\nContribute to architecture decisions and drive engineering best practices\nBasic Qualifications\n8+ years of backend engineering experience \nStrong proficiency in Java-based backend development\nExperience working with cloud platforms (AWS preferred)\nExperience building event-driven architectures and distributed systems\nExperience designing and scaling high-throughput systems handling large volumes of events\nExperience working with AWS-managed databases (e.g., Aurora or similar OLTP systems)\nFamiliarity with containerized systems and Kubernetes ecosystems\nExperience building real-time systems (e.g., usage tracking, billing, metering pipelines)\nStrong understanding of system design, scalability, and reliability principles\nStrong problem-solving skills with focus on efficiency and correctness\nExperience collaborating with cross-functional teams\nPreferred Qualifications\nExperience with Golang for backend development\nDeep expertise in AWS ecosystem (compute, storage, distributed services)\nExperience designing large-scale event processing systems (hundreds of millions to billions of events)\nExperience building cloud commerce platforms, billing systems, or pricing engines\nFamiliarity with real-time usage metering, invoicing, or revenue systems\nExperience working with Kubernetes-based observability signals (logs, infra events, metrics)\nExposure to high-growth systems scaling from early stage to large production scale\nExperience building multi-tenant, customer-facing cloud platforms\nType of work model\nHybrid / Onsite / Remote working\nOur Hybrid work model: Coupang hybrid work model is designed to enable a culture of collaboration that acts a catalyst to enrich the experience of employees.
