The role will work across Linux, PostgreSQL, Java application platforms and CI/CD, helping to deliver platform upgrades, security improvements, disaster recovery capability and reliable deployment processes.\nWorking closely with the Development and wider Infrastructure teams, the engineer will also provide hands-on troubleshooting and technical engineering support across a varied programme of business and technology projects over the coming years.\nMore about the role:\nTake an active role in major-version upgrades and ongoing maintenance of PostgreSQL database platforms, including compatibility testing and query/performance validation.\nPatch, upgrade and maintain Debian/Linux operating systems across the application estate, including security hardening and implementation of infrastructure security improvements.\nBuild and test disaster recovery solutions for key business systems, including failover procedures and periodic DR testing.\nBuild and maintain CI/CD pipelines, working with the Infrastructure and Development teams to support reliable and repeatable deployment of applications and infrastructure.\nAdminister, maintain and tune Apache Tomcat application servers supporting the department’s bespoke Java application stack.\nProvide hands-on Linux systems administration, including monitoring, capacity planning, backups and incident response.\nTroubleshoot production issues spanning operating system, database and application layers, working closely with the Development team and wider DevOps function.\nProvide ongoing support for infrastructure engineering, maintenance and troubleshooting to support the department’s application estate and project pipeline.\nContribute infrastructure expertise to new project environments, deployments and technology initiatives as they arise.\nMaintain appropriate technical documentation and operational records for systems, infrastructure changes and support activities.\nContribute to the continual improvement of infrastructure, deployment and operational processes, helping to improve reliability, security and control.\nSupport the department's compliance with ISO 27001 (Information Security), ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) requirements relevant to infrastructure and DevOps activities.\nAbout you\nProven hands-on experience as a Linux Systems Administrator, Infrastructure Engineer, or similar role, ideally with Debian/Ubuntu environments.\nPractical experience administering PostgreSQL, including major-version upgrades.\nExperience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, for example with Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or equivalent.\nExperience administering Apache Tomcat or similar Java application servers.\nExperience building and testing disaster recovery solutions.\nStrong troubleshooting skills spanning operating system, database, and application layers.\nFamiliarity with security hardening, access controls, system auditing and logging.\nScripting ability, for example Bash or Python, for automating routine administration tasks would be an advantage.\nGood communication skills and the ability to work independently while coordinating with Development and wider Infrastructure teams.\nAwareness of, or practical experience working within, ISO 27001, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management system frameworks (or equivalent) is desirable.\nGDP, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 Responsibilities\nComplying with applicable company policies, procedures, work instructions and legal/regulatory requirements relevant to their role.\nFollowing the requirements of the company's Quality Management System (ISO 9001), Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) and Good Distribution Practice (GDP).\nCompleting all required training and maintaining the competence necessary to perform their role effectively.\nMaintaining accurate, complete and timely records and ensuring that required information is appropriately documented.\nReporting deviations, incidents, non-conformances, environmental incidents and other concerns promptly to their manager or the appropriate responsible person.\nSupporting the effective operation and continual improvement of company processes.\nTaking appropriate action to prevent errors, product quality issues, environmental impacts and risks within their area of responsibility.\nCooperating with internal and external audits and providing accurate information and evidence when requested.\nUnderstanding how their activities contribute to product quality, customer satisfaction, regulatory compliance, environmental performance and the achievement of company objectives.\nCovetrus is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
