You will help take sensors and algorithms from prototype data through robust, flight-ready software, with a particular focus on state estimation, sensor integration, simulation, and verification.\nThe role requires thinking across the boundary between software and the physical vehicle: understanding how sensors fail, how the robot behaves in the real world, and how to build autonomy that remains reliable outside of the lab.\nCRABI is building autonomous robots that live aboard commercial ships and clean their hulls while they are underway. Marine biofouling creates enormous hydrodynamic drag, forcing ships to burn more fuel to maintain speed. By keeping hulls continuously clean, our robots can eliminate a major source of wasted energy across the global fleet-reducing fuel consumption, operating costs, and ultimately maritime CO2 emissions by more than 100 million tons per year.\nDoing that requires robots that can reliably navigate and operate on the hull of a moving ship, underwater, for long periods without human intervention. Our GNC team owns the software that turns noisy sensors and imperfect hardware into a robot that knows where it is, knows how it is moving, and can safely execute its mission. You will work directly with the broader CRABI engineering team to take that system from prototype to deployed product.\nJob Responsibilities:\nDevelop and deploy localization, state estimation, navigation, and control software for an autonomous marine robot.\nTake new sensors from prototype data collection through characterization, filtering, fusion, integration, and production-ready software.\nDesign algorithms that combine inertial, wheel odometry, vision, and other vehicle sensors to estimate robot state in challenging real-world environments.\nDevelop simulation, Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) tests to validate GNC software before deployment.\nDefine requirements, interfaces, failure modes, and performance metrics for vehicle sensors and GNC subsystems.\nAnalyze real-world vehicle data to identify failure modes, improve algorithms, and close the loop between testing and software development.\nDesign and execute system tuning, verification, and on-vehicle testing.\nWork closely with mechanical, electrical, firmware, and test engineers to integrate GNC software with vehicle hardware.\nRequired Qualifications:\nStrong fundamentals in robotics, controls, state estimation, or autonomous systems.\nProficiency developing software in C++ and/or Python.\nHands-on experience integrating physical sensors into robotic or autonomous systems.\nExperience with sensor characterization, data filtering, state estimation, or sensor fusion.\nAbility to analyze imperfect real-world sensor data and translate prototype algorithms into reliable software.\nExperience developing, testing, and debugging software that interacts directly with physical hardware.\n1-7 years of relevant professional experience OR substantial graduate-level research or student engineering experience.\nAble to start full time ASAP.\nPreferred Qualifications:\nExperience with Kalman filtering, inertial navigation, wheel odometry, visual odometry, SLAM, or related estimation techniques.\nExperience developing Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) or Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test systems.\nExperience with ROS or ROS 2.\nExperience with real-time or embedded robotic software.\nExperience designing automated tests, fault injection, or verification infrastructure for autonomous systems.\nExperience working with marine robotics, field robotics, autonomous vehicles, aerospace systems, or other hardware operating in difficult environments.\nExperience on a hands-on student engineering team such as FSAE Driverless, rocketry, UAVs, robotics, or similar.\nA graduate degree with research in robotics, controls, estimation, autonomous systems, or a related field.\nUS work authorization is a precondition of employment. CRABI Robotics does not generally sponsor or participate in employment-based immigration filings. Sponsorship is considered only in exceptional cases at the company’s sole discretion, and applicants should not expect it to be available for this position.\nExport Control Requirement\nCRABI Robotics designs equipment subject to the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR), and this position requires immediate, unrestricted access to technical information controlled under ECCN 8A002/8E001. Under the EAR, sharing that information with certain foreign nationals requires a license from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Because the position requires access from the first day of employment, CRABI does not generally seek export licenses for this position.\nAccordingly, applicants for this position must be either (a) a U.S. person - a U.S. citizen or national, a lawful permanent resident, or an individual granted asylum or refugee status - or (b) a national of a country for which the EAR does not require a license for this technology. The questions below are asked of every applicant to this position and are used solely to make that determination. They are not used to evaluate qualifications, and CRABI does not consider national origin, ethnicity, or place of birth in hiring.\nCRABI Robotics is an equal opportunity employer.","description_format":"text","description_chars":5411,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":1,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Underwater & Marine Robotics"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-03T23:30:07Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":66,"band":"ok","label":"Likely open","p_open":1,"p_active":0.734,"p_room":0.9,"age_days":13,"expected_fill_days":23,"reasons":["conf:3","velocity","win:mid","comp:junior"],"computed_at":"2026-10-12T06:55:09Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/crabi-robotics-robotics-gnc-engineer","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/crabi-robotics-robotics-gnc-engineer.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-13T03:08:54Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":4777,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-14T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":2256681},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=2256681"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fcrabi-robotics-robotics-gnc-engineer"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fcrabi-robotics-robotics-gnc-engineer"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fcrabi-robotics-robotics-gnc-engineer"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/crabi-robotics-robotics-gnc-engineer\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fcrabi-robotics-robotics-gnc-engineer"}]}
