Job Purpose\n\nThe MPI Technician is responsible for conducting Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) on steel components, welds, and structures to detect surface and near-surface defects without damaging the material. The successful candidate will ensure that inspections are performed accurately and in accordance with approved procedures, applicable industry standards, and customer specifications.\n\n2. Key Responsibilities\n\nPerform Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) on steel components, welds, forgings, and other ferromagnetic materials.\n\nConduct visual inspections before and after MPI testing.\n\nPrepare inspection surfaces by removing dirt, oil, grease, and other contaminants.\n\nSet up and operate MPI equipment in accordance with approved inspection procedures.\n\nApply magnetic fields and magnetic particles to identify cracks, seams, laps, and other relevant defects.\n\nInterpret and evaluate inspection indications against applicable acceptance criteria.\n\nReview engineering drawings, technical specifications, and inspection procedures before conducting tests.\n\nMark and document defective areas and report non-conforming components to the supervisor.\n\nCompile accurate inspection reports and maintain traceable inspection records.\n\nVerify that MPI equipment is functioning correctly and that calibration and verification requirements are met.\n\nEnsure that all inspection activities comply with relevant quality standards and customer requirements.\n\nAssist with quality assurance, quality control, and investigations into product defects.\n\nMaintain inspection equipment and ensure that the work area remains clean and organised.\n\nFollow all health, safety, and environmental procedures.\n\nWork overtime or shifts when operationally required.\n\n3. Minimum Qualifications\n\nGrade 12 / Matric, preferably with Mathematics and Physical Science.\n\nValid MPI Level 2 certification from a recognised NDT certification scheme, as required by the employer and applicable inspection procedures.\n\nAdditional NDT certifications, such as Ultrasonic Testing (UT) Level 2 or Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) Level 2, would be advantageous.\n\n4. Experience Requirements\n\nPrevious experience performing Magnetic Particle Inspection in an industrial, engineering, manufacturing, steel fabrication, or related environment.\n\nExperience inspecting welds, steel components, forgings, or machined parts.\n\nKnowledge of NDT principles, inspection techniques, and defect identification.\n\nExperience setting up and operating MPI equipment.\n\nAbility to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and inspection procedures.\n\nExperience preparing inspection reports and maintaining quality documentation.\n\n5. Technical Skills and Competencies\n\nPractical knowledge of Magnetic Particle Inspection techniques.\n\nAbility to identify and evaluate relevant inspection indications.\n\nUnderstanding of surface and near-surface material defects.\n\nKnowledge of applicable NDT standards and acceptance criteria.\n\nAbility to operate, verify, and care for inspection equipment.\n\nGood report-writing and record-keeping skills.\n\nStrong attention to detail and accuracy.\n\nGood communication and problem-solving skills.\n\nAbility to work independently and as part of a technical team.\n\n6. Health and Safety Requirements\n\nComply with all company health and safety policies and site-specific procedures.\n\nWear the required personal protective equipment (PPE).\n\nFollow approved inspection procedures and risk assessments.\n\nHandle inspection chemicals and consumables safely.\n\nReport unsafe conditions, equipment defects, and non-conformances promptly.\n\n7. Key Performance Indicators\n\nAccuracy and reliability of inspection results.\n\nCompliance with approved inspection procedures and applicable standards.\n\nTimely completion of inspection assignments.\n\nAccurate and complete inspection documentation.\n\nProper care and verification of MPI equipment.\n\nCompliance with health and safety requirements.\n\nEffective reporting of defects and non-conforming products.\n\n8. Additional Requirements\n\nWillingness to work shifts and overtime when required.\n\nAbility to work in a workshop or industrial environment.\n\nWillingness to travel to customer sites, if required.\n\nValid driver's licence would be advantageous.\n\nImportant: Candidates must hold the appropriate certification and authorisation for the NDT methods they are expected to perform.
